Broadcaster was honorary graduate and friend of Leicester
The University has expressed its profound sadness at the news of the death of the veteran television and radio broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, an honorary graduate and good friend of our University.
Sir Terry was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in July 2010, acknowledging his long association with the University through his fan club 'Terry's Old Geezers', or 'TOGs'. On several occasions, he graced the University's facilities in Oadby for their annual conference, bringing his wit and good humour to our campus, staff and students.
On awarding Sir Terry his honorary degree, the Public Orator Professor Gordon Campbell said:"You may wonder why it is the University of Leicester is conferring this honour and why Sir Terry is according us the honour of accepting it. The answer lies in a running joke on Radio 2, when Terry Wogan referred to Leicester as a lost city, one that was mentioned in traffic reports because of maintenance work on the motorway, but was otherwise unknown.
"And just as Schliemann announced in 1868 that he had discovered the lost city of Troy, so Terry Wogan announced the discovery of Leicester in November 1984.
"Since then he has discovered that the City has a world-class university that he tells his listeners is ‘the best university in the universe’, and he has on several occasions used the facilities of the University to host the three-day Mardi Gras that is the TOGs convention. His immense capacity for friendship now extends to this University, and we heartily reciprocate."
Speaking on the award of his honorary degree, Sir Terry said: “What is memorable about Leicester is the kind of welcome you get from the University for the TOGs. That is why they keep coming back.
“I would like to have been a student here - it looks like a really nice campus. I am not being sycophantic, but the University of Leicester has a very good reputation. I am deeply honoured to have been offered an Honorary Doctor of Laws.”
Sir Michael Terence Wogan was born in Limerick, Ireland, on 3rd August 1938. He has been the presenter of innumerable TV and Radio shows, and winner of many awards. He will probably be remembered by most audiences for presenting the Eurovision Song Contest for 35 years and Children in Need since its inception in 1980, and helped to raise over half a billion pounds for the charity.

Oakham School Station Road School Building Larger than shown blocking view of Church and Street Scene
When this plan was put before Oakham Town Council it was proposed the new building would
be built in line with the old barn which used by the school shop. Although the building is
currently being built to plan, I can not understand why Oakham Town Council at the time
thought the plans was different.
The comments made by councillors were not passed onto Rutland County Council planning
This week the main frame of the building has gone up and there appears to be an additional
large section added to the front of the building. This was not show to Oakham Town Council
I assume this is another case of a revised planning application which a planning officer
has decided did not have to return to Oakham Town Council for consideration.
This is very imposing blocking the view of the church and the remaining street scene
as you walk along Station Road.

As Rutland County Council reviews its signage policy the Highways department
seems to be adding to the mess with new ugly extra large restrictions yellow signs
obviously designed for the benefit of the visually impaired driver who often
tell enforcement officers they did not see the sign or the large yellow markings
on the road.

Memories of Leicestershire Police Inspector Steff Shellard & Oakham Police Station
Leicestershire Police is celebrating 180 years and asking for our fond memories of them.
Now owned by Oakham School
Inspector Steff Shellard joined Leicestershire Police in 1999, working as a police officer in the city centre until he was promoted to sergeant at Spinney Hill in 2005. As a sergeant he has worked in a variety of roles including Neighbourhood Sergeant at Blaby and Custody Sergeant at Keyham Lane. In July 2011, after a successful period as Deputy Commander for Rutland, he was promoted to Patrol and Resolution Inspector, in January 2013.
I have two fond memories of Steff Shellard the first was of a day I attempted to make a complaint
about Oakham Town Councillors campaign of hate. The then Sgt Steff Shellard was getting a
little pissed off with my complaints and came to the front desk took my phone of me and dragged
me to the back of the police station to intimidate me into not visiting the police station again.
My second memory was when he and the Inspector actually took some positive action, he and the
inspector raided Cllr Charles Haworth's home, arrested him and took away all his computers and phones. This Charles Haworth remained on police bail for a year, Charles Haworth had the
privilege of police protection even though the raid was prompted by him taking the pee out
of the police on-line their words at the time not mine, he was never charged for his harassment against me and others described but the district judge as Homophobic, Crude and Crass. He also only just missed being prosecuted for contempt of court.
Leicestershire Police have a strange perception of what is good work and deserving of
promotion. I wonder if they also promoted Sgt Foster he was vile, he said i deserved all
I get and strongly object to my blog posts about Frank Beck, I wonder if he was involved
in that mess?
