Linda Chatfield, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Rutland County Council, Oakham North East By Election Thursday, November 21st 2024

Linda Chatfield, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Rutland County Council, Oakham North East By Election Thursday, November 21st 2024

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our Liberal Democrat councillor, Hannah Edwards. I had the privilege of knowing Hannah personally, as she worked closely with my husband, Mark, who also serves as a councillor for Oakham North East. Through their collaboration, I witnessed first hand just how exceptional Hannah was and how deeply she cared for our community.

Hannah has left behind an incredible legacy and some very big shoes to fill. I am standing in the upcoming by-election with a commitment to continuing her hard work and building the strongest possible team to represent us.

This community is my home, and I care passionately about our wonderful town. However, years of budget cuts and complacency have left us with significant challenges that need to be addressed.

Take, for instance, our local health services, which have become increasingly strained under previous Conservative-led government cuts. It has become far too difficult for residents to secure GP or NHS dental appointments. This situation simply isn’t acceptable. As your councillor, one of my top priorities will be to campaign for improved healthcare access in our town, including more accessible GP appointments and stronger support for mental health services.

Locally, the Conservative administration left Rutland residents facing one of the highest council tax rates in the country, all while reducing our access to essential facilities and services. I believe we simply cannot afford to let them take office again, especially given how severely they’ve let us down in the past.

In addition to fighting for better healthcare services, I will work tirelessly to protect our green spaces from reckless development, ensuring that any new homes are built in the right areas, with proper infrastructure in place.

Most importantly, I am committed to being open, accountable, and accessible to every resident. I will hold regular advice surgeries and stay in close contact year-round. Unlike some councillors from other parties, I will not disappear after election day.

I believe passionately that the main role of a councillor is to ensure that every voice in our community is heard. If elected, that is precisely what I will strive to achieve.

Please do consider giving me your support on 21st November. Thank you.

A Family Affair Oakham By-Election Candidates Step Up

A Family Affair Oakham By-Election Candidates Step Up

The upcoming Oakham by-election is stirring local interest, especially with the involvement of candidates who are closely linked to current and former council members. Following the unexpected passing of Councillor Hannah Edwards, a member of the Liberal Democrats, residents of Oakham North East will soon have the opportunity to choose a new county councillor. Among the candidates vying for this important role are Kate Ross, the daughter of Ramsay Ross, a Labour councillor for Oakham North West, and Linda Chatfield, the wife of Councillor Mark Chatfield, who also represents the Liberal Democrats. This familial connection adds a unique dimension to the election, highlighting both a legacy of public service and a desire to continue the work of their predecessors. Both Kate Ross and Linda Chatfield are running on party lines similar to their family members. Ross aims to embody the values of her father’s party, while Chatfield wishes to further the goals of the Liberal Democrats, following in the footsteps of her husband. In addition to Kate and Linda, the ballot will also feature Conservative candidate Christopher Clark, a long-time Oakham resident and retired businessman, alongside Ben Callaghan from Reform UK, who previously served as an Independent councillor for several years. All four candidates have emphasised the regeneration of Oakham’s town centre as a key priority. Christopher Clark drew on his extensive local experience, underlining the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of the town. He stated, “I’ve been involved in so many things in Oakham that I believe I could make a real difference. It’s essential to engage residents in the discussions about what they want for our town.” Linda Chatfield echoed this commitment to community, expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of continuing the community surgeries once held by Hannah Edwards. Reflecting on her family’s political background, she conveyed a deep belief in the values of the Liberal Democrats. Meanwhile, Ben Callaghan, who recently joined Reform UK, is optimistic about gaining support from residents. He shared, “It’s early days, but the feedback I’ve received thus far has been encouraging. People want practical solutions, and we aim to deliver just that.” As the election date approaches on Thursday, November 21, the excitement is palpable. Voters will have the chance to choose their representative, with the results anticipated to be announced the following day. The familial ties among the candidates may add a personal touch to the political landscape of Oakham, but ultimately, it will be the residents who determine their next county councillor.

Fight the Food Waste Monster This Halloween! Creamy Pumpkin Soup.

Fight the Food Waste Monster This Halloween! Creamy Pumpkin Soup.

Fight the Food Waste Monster This Halloween!

Halloween is a time for spooky fun, not scary amounts of food waste! Rutland County Council is calling on residents to help reduce the amount of leftover pumpkin and other treats ending up in black bins.

Did you know that over 40% of waste in our black bins is actually food? That's a lot of perfectly good food going to waste!  Rutland County Council's "waste less, recycle more" campaign encourages residents to be mindful of food waste this Halloween.

Pumpkins are a Halloween staple, but sadly, many end up uneaten. Love Food Hate Waste estimates that a whopping 12.8 million pumpkins bought for decoration go uneaten each year in the UK!  That's a scary amount of food waste!

Don't Let Your Pumpkin Become a Monster!

There are many ways to dispose of your pumpkin responsibly and avoid adding to food waste:

Pumpkin Feast for Worms and Bugs: Cut your pumpkin into chunks and bury it 20 centimetres deep in your soil. It'll be a delicious treat for your garden critters!

Compost Your Pumpkin: Chop your pumpkin into smaller pieces and add it to your compost bin or heap. This will turn your pumpkin into nutrient-rich compost for your plants.

Spooktacular Bird Feeder: Turn your pumpkin into a spooky bird feeder! Just make sure it's far enough away from the ground to deter unwanted visitors.

Get Creative in the Kitchen!

Before you toss your pumpkin, consider using the flesh in delicious recipes. Pumpkin is a versatile ingredient that can be used in soups, pies, breads, and even pasta sauce! Love Food Hate Waste has a wealth of pumpkin recipes to inspire you: www.lovefoodhatewaste.com.

Think Outside the Pumpkin Patch

If you're not a fan of pumpkin, consider using a different vegetable for decoration. Butternut squash is a great alternative – it's nutritious, affordable, and can be used in many recipes just like pumpkin.

By following these simple tips, we can all help reduce food waste this Halloween and have a spooky, sustainable celebration!

Here is a recipe suggestion:

Creamy Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients

1 large pumpkin, peeled, seeded, and cut into chunks

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 cups vegetable broth

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions:

Roast the Pumpkin:

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Toss pumpkin chunks with a drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper on a baking sheet.

Roast for 30-40 minutes, or until tender.

Sauté the Aromatics:

In a large pot, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until softened and fragrant.

Combine and Simmer:

Add the roasted pumpkin, vegetable broth, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg to the pot.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the soup is smooth and creamy.

Blend:

Use an immersion blender or transfer the soup to a regular blender to blend until smooth.

Serve:

Pour the soup into bowls and garnish with fresh parsley.

Optional:

For a richer flavour, add a splash of maple syrup or a drizzle of honey.

For a heartier soup, add cooked sausage or bacon.

For a spicy kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce.

Enjoy your homemade pumpkin soup!

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, who later served in the US Congress.  Pritchard and his friends, Barney McCallum and Bill Bell, devised the game and established the rules, making pickleball a truly American invention.
