Oakham Castle to Host Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony This June

Oakham Castle will once again serve as the focal point for Rutland’s military appreciation, hosting the annual Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, 22nd June.

The brief, poignant ceremony is scheduled to begin promptly at 10:30am. Members of the public, veterans, and service families are warmly invited to gather and show their support for the UK’s armed forces community.

The event marks the official start of the week leading up to National Armed Forces Day. Rutland holds a uniquely deep connection to the military; with major bases at Kendrew and St George’s Barracks, roughly one in five Rutland residents has a direct link to the armed forces.

Event Details

The ceremony provides a vital opportunity for the local community to stand side-by-side with civic leaders, dignitaries, and veterans to recognise the ongoing sacrifices made by serving troops, reservists, and their families.

Date: Monday, 22nd June

Time: 10:30am (Attendees are requested to arrive early as the ceremony starts exactly on time)

Location: Oakham Castle Grounds, Market Place, Oakham, LE15 6DT

Admission: Completely free, open to all, and no RSVP or formal confirmation is required.

Important Parking Note: To preserve the historic integrity of the site and ensure safety during the event, parking will strictly not be permitted within the Oakham Castle grounds. Attendees are advised to utilise the public pay-and-display car parks located throughout Oakham town centre.

Whether you have family in the forces or simply want to say a quiet thank you to those who serve, your presence on the castle lawn is a powerful reminder of the unique bond between Rutland and its military units.

Community Spirit Shines Bright For Rutland Raises Over £10,000 at County Show

The power of community spirit was on full display at the latest Rutland County Show, where local fundraising powerhouse For Rutland celebrated another spectacular success. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of attendees, local businesses, and dedicated volunteers, the group’s famous Grand Bottle Tombola raised an incredible sum of more than £10,000 in a single afternoon.

The Grand Bottle Tombola has become an eagerly anticipated staple of the show, drawing massive crowds of visitors keen to try their luck while supporting a deeply meaningful cause. This year’s event surpassed expectations, keeping volunteers incredibly busy from the moment the gates opened until the final prize was claimed. Jeannette Warner, Chair of the fundraising group, expressed immense gratitude to everyone who made the achievement possible, noting that the remarkable generosity of local residents and businesses transformed the day into a wonderful community effort and marked one of their most successful tombolas to date.

Every penny raised by For Rutland stays entirely within the area, directly impacting lives across England’s smallest county. As a passionate, entirely volunteer-run group, their mission focuses on securing a vital lifeline for residents facing difficult times. The funds are donated directly to Citizens Advice Rutland to pay for specialist advisers. These professionals provide essential, practical support to people of all ages living with long-term health conditions in Rutland and the surrounding communities, helping families navigate complex financial, legal, and housing challenges during incredibly stressful times.

This latest triumph at the County Show continues a trend of extraordinary fundraising milestones for the group. Earlier this spring, For Rutland raised a staggering £57,000 during their annual Good and New Clothes Sale held at the Rutland Hall Hotel. Combined with the proceeds from the bottle tombola, the group has successfully injected tens of thousands of pounds into local care initiatives this year alone. Through these continuous efforts, the volunteers and supporters of For Rutland regularly demonstrate that their community possesses an undeniably massive heart.

Rutland Libraries Set for Major Transformation as Adult Learning Moves Closer to Home

Adult education across England's smallest county is about to become far more accessible. Beginning in September 2026, Rutland County Council’s Living Well Rutland service will officially expand its adult and community learning courses directly into local libraries, moving them out of their singular centralised hub and straight into the heart of local communities. Currently, these educational programs are delivered primarily from the Oakham Enterprise Centre. The upcoming relocation will spread these opportunities across the county's four main library sites in Oakham, Uppingham, Ketton, and Ryhall.

This expansion is a core component of the wider Living Well Rutland initiative, which focuses on fostering stronger, healthier, and better-connected neighborhoods by optimizing localised facilities and council services. To prepare for this influx of new learners and activities, local libraries are benefiting from a massive £950,000 investment designed to completely refurbish the existing facilities. Ongoing construction and technological upgrades are actively converting underutilised library spaces into flexible, modern community hubs that feature purpose-built activity rooms and advanced technology equipment to ensure high-quality learning environments.

By utilising these newly renovated spaces, the adult and community learning service aims to significantly increase its reach, making it easier for residents to learn new skills while reducing the need for travel. The strategy repositions libraries as multifaceted venues where traditional book lending coexists with wellness resources, skill-building, and localised public services.

Councillor Tim Smith, Rutland County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children and Families, expressed high optimism for the upcoming shift, noting that it represents an exciting opportunity to expand adult learning across Rutland and make courses more accessible to residents in their own communities. He highlighted that by using these improved library spaces, the council can reach more people and reduce barriers to learning. He further explained that through Living Well Rutland, the council is investing in services and spaces that support residents throughout their lives, making this change a positive example of how local libraries are evolving to meet community needs both now and in the future.

Further details regarding the revamped 2026 to 2027 course guide, specific enrollment dates, and the new program structure will be shared with learners and residents in the coming weeks.

Supporting Rutland’s Unpaid Carers What’s On for Carers Week 2026, June 8th – June 14th

Carers Week is a crucial annual campaign led by Carers UK, dedicated to recognising and celebrating the massive contribution made by the UK's estimated 5.8 million unpaid carers. These are the individuals who look after family members, friends, or neighbours who need extra help due to illness, disability, a mental health condition, or an addiction.

Here in Rutland, England’s smallest county, our community of local carers plays an invaluable role. To show our gratitude, bring people together, and highlight the vital support networks available locally, a comprehensive program of events and activities has been organized throughout June 2026.

Whether you are looking for expert advice, a casual coffee with peers who understand your journey, or an opportunity to help shape future council services, there is something for everyone.

Carers Week Events (June 8th – June 14th)

The core week features localized hubs for expert face-to-face support, online specialized groups, and relaxed social meetups.

Coffee and Catch Up

Scheduled for Friday 12 June from 9:00am to 11:00am, this meetup is located at the Captain Noel Newton (Wetherspoon) in Oakham. Run by the team at the Rutland Parent Carer Voice website, this informal morning session is all about a friendly chat and a warm drink with fellow carers. It is a great space to swap stories, share experiences, and unwind.

Continuing Support: Post-Carers Week Events

Caring doesn't stop when Carers Week ends, and neither does Rutland's outreach. A series of follow-up events are scheduled throughout the rest of June to keep the momentum going.

Tesco Information Event

Pop by on Wednesday 17 June between 9:00am and 2:00pm at the Tesco Store in Oakham. This is a convenient, drop-in setup during your normal food shop where you can come along to meet several amazing local charities and support groups dedicated to assisting carers of all backgrounds.

Rutland Photographers Invited to Capture the Region for New 2027 Calendar

If you love our local area and always find yourself snapping photos of your surroundings, a new community initiative is offering the perfect opportunity to showcase your talent. Rutland & Stamford Sound has officially launched its Local Lens Photography Competition. Organised in partnership with and proudly sponsored by Pixel + Paper, the contest celebrates the unique charm of the region while giving local residents of all ages a chance to see their work published.

The core theme of the competition is simply Rutland & Stamford. To qualify, submissions must feature a location, landmark, or subject found directly within the local area. Whether it is a sunset over Rutland Water, the historic stone architecture of Stamford, or a quiet moment in a village community, the organisers are looking for images that reflect what makes this corner of the world so special to the people who live here.

The competition is structured to give everyone a fair chance, dividing entries into three distinct age brackets based on the upcoming academic year. The Adult category, which also includes sixth-form and college students, will see ten winning photographs selected. The youth categories will highlight the region's younger talent, with two winners chosen from secondary schools and another two from primary schools. Organizers note that students who have just finished Year 6 should enter the secondary category, while Year 11 leavers should submit their work under the adult section.

In total, fourteen winning images will be selected to form the official Rutland & Stamford Calendar 2027. Beyond securing a spot in the calendar, the winning photographers will receive full photo credits within the publication, a physical copy of the finished calendar, and an official commendation certificate. Furthermore, the winning shots will be prominently featured in the upcoming Local Lens Exhibition, offering valuable public exposure for the photographers' work.

Submissions are currently open to all amateur and aspiring photographers in the community.

Oakham Town Council Halts Operations as Staff Shortage Forces Temporary Closure

In an unprecedented turn of events, Oakham Town Council has officially closed its doors and postponed all upcoming public meetings until further notice.

The abrupt shutdown, announced via a public notice on Wednesday, 3rd June 2026, reveals that the local authority is currently facing a total absence of its workforce, leaving it legally and operationally paralysed.

According to the statement issued by the Chairman of the council, the standard business of the council has ground to a complete halt because it currently lacks any available staff. Crucially, the absence extends to the Proper Officer and the Responsible Financial Officer. Without these key statutory figures, a local parish or town council cannot legally function, authorise financial expenditures, or hold valid public meetings, forcing the current blanket suspension of services.

While the Town Council is temporarily unable to respond to standard administrative queries or manage local affairs, governance in the area has not disappeared entirely. Residents who are facing urgent municipal matters, public service disruptions, or local issues are being directed to Rutland County Council, the principal authority for the region. The county council remains fully operational and can be reached directly by phone at 01572 722577 or online through their official website at www.rutland.gov.uk.

Town Council officials have assured the community that they are working to resolve the staffing crisis as swiftly as possible, though no definitive timeline has been given for a return to regular service. Officials have asked the public for patience and understanding during the interim. In the meantime, residents are advised to monitor physical town noticeboards and the official Oakham Town Council website, where updates regarding the reopening of the offices and the rescheduling of meetings will be published as soon as they become available.
