A New Chapter Begins The White Horse at Stretton Rutland Returns to Its Roots

There is something profoundly special about the revival of a historic village pub. In the heart of Stretton, a transformation is underway that signals both a return to tradition and the beginning of an exciting new era. The venue, formerly known as The Jackson Stops, is proudly embracing its heritage by officially renaming itself The White Horse at Stretton.

This Grade II listed building has long served as a focal point for the community, and the current team is deeply committed to honoring that legacy. The ongoing renovation is a careful, measured process of restoration, designed to breathe new life into the charming structure while preserving the architectural character that makes it such a landmark. By balancing historic preservation with the comforts of a modern country pub, the owners are working to ensure that the space feels as authentic as it is inviting.

The vision for The White Horse is rooted in the idea of hospitality in its truest form. It is being reimagined not just as a place to dine or drink, but as a genuine "home away from home" a space where neighbours can gather, celebrations can unfold, and the simple act of sharing a meal becomes a memorable experience. Whether welcoming back loyal patrons who have frequented the site for years or opening the doors to new visitors exploring the area, the team is focused on creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere that serves as the heartbeat of the village.

As the final stages of the project approach, the anticipation surrounding the opening date continues to build. The team behind the project has expressed deep gratitude for the support and encouragement they have received from the community thus far, noting that this collective enthusiasm has been a vital part of the restoration journey.

While the doors remain closed for now, the pub is already preparing to welcome the community back into its fold. Those eager to witness the transformation can follow the journey through the official Instagram account @thewhitehorsestretton, where updates on the renovation and news regarding the official opening date will be shared. For those with media or business inquiries, the team is reachable via email at hello@thewhitehorsestretton.com. As the finishing touches are applied to this storied building, it is clear that The White Horse at Stretton is poised to once again become a beloved fixture of the local landscape.

The High Cost of Silence Alicia Kearns MP Calls Out Year-Long Failure to Address Offensive Conduct by Rutland Councillor Mark Chatfield

By Local Democracy & Public Affairs Reporter  not affiliated to the BBC LDRS

An image depicting Rutland Councillor Mark Chatfield,
modified to reflect comments made by MP Alicia Kearns
regarding his past social media activity.

In her remarks to the House of Commons on June 18, 2026,
Alicia Kearns reported that Councillor Mark Chatfield
had posted offensive content, specifically citing a post in which he compared
the Member for Richmond and Northallerton
(Rishi Sunak) to "different shades of toast."
This image visualization highlights the nature of those reported comments.

The integrity of our local democracy relies on a delicate contract of trust between elected officials and the communities they serve. That trust is built on a foundation of professional conduct, public service, and a baseline of civility. When that foundation is shaken by the actions of those in power, it is the responsibility of institutions to act. However, the experience of Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Stamford, over the past year suggests that when it comes to holding representatives accountable for their online conduct, the mechanisms we rely on are dangerously broken.

A year ago, Ms. Kearns took the necessary step of reporting Rutland Councillor Mark Chatfield to the Rutland County Council regarding a series of deeply troubling social media posts. The content, as acknowledged by the Council itself, was problematic, including racist remarks, insults directed at Rutland residents, and aggressive attacks on local journalists. Despite this formal admission that the comments were “insulting, racist and offensive,” the Council chose to take no action. Their rationale that the posts were made in a “personal capacity” is a defense that crumbles under scrutiny, especially given that Councillor Chatfield consistently used the same platform to weigh in on community issues while identified as a sitting Councillor.

This dismissal by the Council set off a chain of institutional inertia that has persisted for twelve months. Hoping to find justice through party channels, Alicia Kearns escalated the matter to the Liberal Democrats in August of last year. She sought a resolution through the due process the party claims to uphold. The party’s own internal framework promises an average turnaround of six weeks for complaints, yet Alicia Kearns was met with months of silence. It was only two weeks ago, nearly a year after the initial report, that the party finally acknowledged the complaint had not even been progressed.

This is not merely a bureaucratic failure; it is a profound abandonment of standards. If our political parties and local councils are truly committed to civility in public life, they cannot treat valid complaints as inconveniences to be ignored or deferred indefinitely. When institutions allow offensive behavior to go unchecked, they effectively normalise it, signaling to the public that there are no consequences for such actions.

The path toward accountability has been unnecessarily arduous, but there remains a potential for a proper resolution. Following her inquiry in the House of Commons, Alicia Kearns was approached by a Liberal Democrat MP who was clearly alarmed by the details of the case. This colleague has now pledged to ensure that the party finally reviews the complaint with the urgency and gravity it deserves.

As we look at the state of our local discourse, it is clear that silence is no longer an acceptable response. Leadership is defined not just by the policies a representative champions, but by the standards they uphold. It is time for both Rutland County Council and the Liberal Democrats to demonstrate that they value the integrity of their institutions more than the preservation of a status quo that enables misconduct. Accountability should never be a matter of partisan convenience; it is a fundamental requirement for a healthy, functioning democracy.

Governance Crisis, Oakham Town Council Accounts Frozen Amidst Allegations of Unauthorised Intervention

By Local Democracy & Public Affairs Reporter  not affiliated to the BBC LDRS

Former Oakham Mayor Cllr Paul Ainsley

A major governance crisis is unfolding at Oakham Town Council, as the council’s financial operations have been thrown into disarray following the freezing of its HSBC bank accounts. The lockdown of these funds, which are estimated to hold £350,000 in council reserves and vital Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money, has been directly attributed to a series of unauthorised and reportedly inaccurate communications initiated by Councillor Paul Ainsley.

The situation came to a head when it was revealed that Cllr Ainsley bypassed standard council protocols to contact the HSBC safeguarding team. According to accounts provided by fellow members, the councillor attempted to seize control of the council’s financial affairs without any prior resolution or mandate from the full council body. During these unauthorised interactions, Cllr Ainsley allegedly provided demonstrably false information to bank officials, explicitly stating that the Town Clerk, Chris Evans, had terminated his employment with Oakham Town Council. This claim, which has been proven false as Mr. Evans remains in his role appears to have been the catalyst for HSBC’s decision to intervene. The Clerk is currently on leave.

The fallout from these actions has been severe. An official letter from the HSBC Safeguard Team, confirms that the accounts are currently under a strict "safeguard review." The bank has acknowledged being informed that the primary user/signatory had allegedly left the council, and as a result, restrictions have been imposed, effectively paralysing the council’s ability to access its own funds. HSBC has made it clear that these restrictions will remain in place until the council completes a formal verification process and updates its account mandates a cumbersome and time-consuming administrative hurdle forced upon the council by the initial misinformation.

The professional and ethical implications of these actions have sparked outrage among other elected members. At a meeting this past Monday, two councillors sumbmitted formal questions asking Cllr Ainsley to produce the specific council resolution that authorised his contact with the bank and his representation of the council’s financial interests. Despite these formal inquiries, Cllr Ainsley has so far refused to explain his actions or account for the misleading information provided to the bank.

The freezing of these accounts represents a significant operational failure that has left the town council unable to conduct its financial business as usual. As the council struggles to restore access to its reserves, the broader issue remains the lack of accountability and the potential for a single councillor to unilaterally jeopardise public funds. With no clear explanation for the unauthorised attempt to seize control of the accounts, the council now faces the urgent task of rectifying the bank’s records while addressing the severe breach of governance protocols that has led to this unprecedented financial lockdown.

Oakham Town Council Chairman Says:

"As Chairman of Oakham Town Council, I feel it is necessary to provide clarity regarding the current status of our HSBC accounts and the events that led to this situation. My awareness of these issues began when one of our two official signatories approached me, expressing deep discomfort after being pressured by Cllr Paul Ainsley to sign documentation that would have granted him sole control over the council’s accounts.

Compounding my concern, I was subsequently notified by another member that they had contacted the police to report Cllr Ainsley regarding separate, serious allegations concerning other bank accounts held by the council. Given the gravity of these potential financial irregularities, I immediately sought answers from Cllr Ainsley regarding his actions concerning our HSBC mandate. Rather than providing transparency or a legitimate explanation for his conduct, Cllr Ainsley simply informed me that, due to the nature of the allegations reported to the police, he would be stepping back from the HSBC accounts.

The resulting freeze on the public funds, which include vital reserves and Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money, is an incredibly serious matter. I am, however, relieved that the HSBC fraud department has taken decisive action to safeguard the public money held within these accounts. It will be the council absolute priority is to ensure the integrity of the council's finances, and the Locum will be working diligently to resolve the requirements set by the bank to restore normal operations. I am committed to full cooperation with all relevant authorities to ensure that public funds remain secure and that these matters are investigated with the thoroughness they require."
