Student Mental Health Steering Group – Rutland LINk Representative required

Student Mental Health Steering Group – Rutland LINk Representative required

We need someone to represent Rutland LINk

We need someone to represent Rutland LINk on a new Steering Group that will endeavour to continually improve student mental health in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

We need a person who:

·         Has some knowledge of higher education either as a parent or student

·         Has some understanding of mental health issues

·         Would be able to give half a day per month to make a difference to the lives of young people locally

An initial meeting has been provisionally arranged for the 18th April 2012, 2pm-4pm, to be held in the Conservatory Meeting Room, George Hine House, Towers site, Leicester. After then the group will meet monthly for the first six months then quarterly.

If you are interested in this important role please contact Ian@communitiesinpartnership.org.uk or call the LINk office 0116 229 3103

Background

Over the last ten months representatives from the 3 Universities in Leicestershire have been working together with the Leicestershire Involvement Network ‘LINk’ and the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust to consider the mental health of students in higher education.

The transition into higher education often presents young people with additional issues at a time when they are already experiencing the challenges of progressing from adolescence into adulthood. The stresses of university life can exacerbate pre-existing conditions for some and precipitate problems with mental health wellbeing for others.

The numbers of students presenting with mental health problems, together with severity is increasing

The increased need locally replicates findings in the recent report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists ‘Mental health of students in higher education’ http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/files/pdfversion/CR166.pdf
