Rutland public transport plan wins £4m funds
The county council wants to build a bus, rail and car hub at Oakham railway station and set up a tourist bus which serves Rutland Water and main towns. Also planned is a shuttle bus to link villages in the county with major nearby employers.
The government grant comes from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund which aims to deliver carbon savings and economic growth.
Plans for Oakham's transport hub will see the bus station moved next to the railway station, with car parking and and cycle hire facilities expanded.
Struggling families The shuttle bus is designed to allow people living in the most rural areas to commute to shifts at factories like clothing manufacturer Lands' End in Oakham.
Deputy leader of Rutland County Council, Terry King, said the impression the area was affluent was misleading.
"A large part of our population are rural residents and often those rural residents are not well off - even if they live in a large house they might have inherited.
"We also have young people who struggle. If you have a young family and both parents have to work to live, often with only one card if they are lucky, they would have to find their way round with public transport."
