Emirates cable cars spanning the River Thames between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks Photograph

The cable car spanning the River Thames between North Greenwich and the Royal Docks opened to the public in June 2012.

The Emirates Air Line has the capacity to carry up to 2,500 people an hour in each direction and it is open seven days a week.
The gondolas reach a height of 50 metres and they are accessible for wheelchair users, pushchairs and cyclists (two bicycles per gondola).

Operational times

The usual operating hours are:
  • 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday
  • 8am to 9pm Saturday
  • 9am to 9pm Sunday.
During the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (27 July to 12 August and 29 August to 9 September) the Emirates Air Line operating hours will be extended:
  • 7am to 11.30pm Monday to Saturday
  • 8am to 11.30pm Sunday
There will also be extended opening hours when there are events at local venues, such as The O2.
Oyster Card on the cable car?
passengers can touch in with Oyster pay-as-you-go cards, at a cost of £3.20 for adults, £1.60 for children.

Other ways to pay for your travel

  • Pay by cash - £4.30 for adults, £2.20 for children
  • Passengers with Travelcards or other Oyster Cards - including Freedom Passes - will be able to travel for the same fare, but you will need to buy a ticket from the offices or ticket machines at the terminals. Single, return and mult-trip tickets are also available from Greenwich Tourist Information Centre and London City Airport
  • A 'frequent flyer' boarding pass for regular users costs £16 for 10 single journeys.
Emirates started work on the project in July 2011 and invested £36million in a 10-year sponsorship deal.
More than 50 people have been employed to operate the service, and nearly half of those come from the local area.
