Just over a week ago, Greenpeace campaigners were clinging to the side of the Shard, Europe’s tallest building. Now, still in a state of joy and disbelief at what they achieved together. Because of their climb, Shell’s reckless plan to drill for oil in the Arctic made headlines around the world. What the six climbers did last week was only possible with support from the public donations. Their lives were literally hanging on a rope, some slings and some karabiners. And every single piece of life saving kit was paid for by public donations – not governments or companies. Can you chip in with whatever you can afford to help fight Shell’s dangerous plan for Arctic oil? The six can’t stand feeling helpless as oil companies roll in to trash the Arctic for the sake of even more dirty oil. More oil, means more warming, and temperatures in the Arctic are rising fast. We’ve already lost 75% of summer sea ice volume in the last 30 years. This is a huge warning sign that terrifies them, but to oil executives it sounds like an opportunity to line their pockets. With Shell’s offices in the shadow of the Shard, they were there to shine a light on the stuff they’d rather people didn’t know about - like their plan to exploit the Arctic or their safety record when it comes to drilling. Greenpeace can stop Shell in the Arctic with their ships, they can stop Shell’s PR machine with campaigns in the press, and they can stop Shell’s finances by working with the investors and shareholders. But organising against Shell’s irresponsible Arctic drilling plan takes a lot of money. Please make a small contribution now to help prepare for the next confrontation with Shell. |
