Tory Leader Roger Begy and Deputy Leader Terry King say, they must protect the council staff and provide them with financial support, because if they did not it is likely the employees could sue Rutland County Council and its a better option for them to sue the Three UKIP Councillors.
Are the council staff not union members and if they are why are the union not funding legal action?
If any officer does decide to sue there is likely to be no winners.
The councils own report states it does not know how much any case will cost.
Last night they gave an estimate of £150,000
They say they have spent £42,000 of public money so far, and that is before any action has been taken. So I think £150,000 is a very conservative estimate.
Any officer taking action will have to pay back the councils costs only if they win any defamation case.
This is the UK and not America if any officer does win, the payout is surely going to be a lot less than the costs meaning they won't benefit from any payout and the Rutland tax payer will be out of pocket and the Lawyers will be laughing all the way to the bank!
I hope someone will be looking at the legality of public money being used to bring private legal actions
against Councillors.
Are the UKIP Councillors covered by Rutland County Council insurance?
Other councils provide insurance for their councillors.
