Henry VIII: His Early Life
Wed 25 Sept 7.30pm
How did Henry VIII go from being the ideal Renaissance prince to a bloated monster with a succession of wives? Why did this loyal son of the Church break with Rome and what drove him to turn on his own loyal servants? Many of the answers lie in his early years.

The Crimean War - Myths and Legends
Wed 16 Oct 7.30pm
Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole; the Charge of the Light Brigade and the Thin Red Line. What really happened? How did the myths come about and who perpetuated them?

The Black Death
Wed 20 Nov 7.30pm
The Great Mortality’ slew some third of the population of Europe in a little more than three years. Where did it come from and how did it spread? Why did this plague prove so deadly and what was its impact on England and the wider medieval world?

The Danelaw
Wed 11 Dec 7.30pm
Created by the Treaty of Wedmore between Alfred the Great and the Army of the Danes, this was the area of east and north England between the rivers Thames and Tees settled by the Danes in the ninth century. Within its bounds Danish law, customs and language prevailed and its linguistic influence is still apparent today.
