Brian Montgomery Rutland County Independent Councillor Whissendine, Councillor passed away this weekend.

Brian Montgomery County Independent Councillor Whissendine Councillor passed away this weekend.

Councillor Montgomery (left)

served as Chairman of Rutland County Council between 1986-88 and 1995-97.

He was one of the leaders of the campaign for Rutland independence and raised the Rutland flag as Chairman. 1 April 1997

Mr Montgomery at one point became very disillusioned by the Conservatives at Rutland County Council and Joined the 4 Rutland Group which became the Anti Corruption Group and he jumped ship and returned to being an Independent when he became aware of Helen Briggs intentions to take legal action against the group now known as the The Rutland UKIP group.

I personally liked Mr Montgomery's honest opinion.

For 21 years he was the Clerk of Empingham Parish Council and he could never understand why
a certain town clerk was paid so much money. He told me he took a very small fee for his work at Empingham, I am not sure it would even equate to 1% of what our town council pays its clerk for the same if not less work. I sense Mr Montgomery was a champion of good old fashioned community spirited public service. Which is steadily vanishing.

Leader of Rutland County Council, Councillor Roger Begy commented today: “It was Brian who persuaded me to put my name forward to be a Councillor way back in 1995. He was one of the leaders of the campaign for Rutland independence and raised the Rutland flag as Chairman. Brian has served Rutland for many years and he will be greatly missed. His passion for rural issues, particularly through his work with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, has made a huge contribution to life in the county as we know it.”
