Rickell Cory Patterson, who stabbed former Rutland Times journalist Timothy Smith to death is refused early parole after appeal.

Rickell Cory Patterson, of St Ann's, stabbed 40-year-old Timothy Smith to death after he accidentally stepped into his path, 1 May 2007

Rickell Cory Patterson was convicted of the murder after initially pleading guilty to manslaughter he was initially sentenced to a minimum of 14 years at the city's crown court in November 2007.

The term - or tariff - was later cut to 12 years by three judges at the Criminal Court of Appeal in April 2008 they said the fact he had handed himself in and behaved in prison meant the term should be reduced to 12 years.

Yesterday, despite commending him on his progress while in custody, Mr Justice Wilkie refused to grant Patterson any more time off his term.

Timothy Smith had lived in Nottingham for about 2 years. Previously he had lived in Oakham and
worked as a council and court reporter for the Rutland Times.

Tim had planned to go into business with the mayor of the town, Jim Harrison also a photographer for the paper. This never happened due to Mr Harrison poor health.
