Belvoir Associates was started in 1990 as a flat-packed domestic furniture manufacturer, producing a range of items such as TV furniture, home office desks and bedroom furniture.
Initially we produced for UK retailers, UK Mail Order and Continental Mail Order houses, with a business ‘split’ of approximately 25% UK and 75% European sales. With the advances of IT, our business has grown considerably in the latter years, entirely due to Web trading, and our business ‘split’ is now approximately 55% UK and 45% European sales. Our turnover, in 2 years, has increased from £1.1 million to £2.5 million.
We employ some 35 people which includes one part-time ‘home-worker’ on the administration side. If broadband provisions were to improve, we could increase our employee numbers by 25% and expand the ‘home-work’ scheme or acquire additional office space.
Our company is prohibited from future growth due to two areas, the speed of our local broadband and that our office space is working to full capacity. A better broadband provision would, however, enable us to implement more ‘home-workers’.
We have experienced a huge growth in the UK direct sales side of our business as we have two Ebay sites and our own Web-site. We expect sales to increase via the internet due to the demise of MFI, Durham Pine, Courts and numerous smaller retailers.

We find our current 2 mbps broadband extremely restrictive and believe a 10 mbps option is the minimum requirement needed to ‘tap’ such a huge resource in the future.
