About the race

The 3 mile course is set around Melton Country Park, with the meeting place and starting area at the Country Park Café, Wymondman Way, Melton Mowbray, LE13 1HP.

The race starts at 7.30pm, with a warm up at 7.15pm. Participants will be able to collect their race packs, which will include a race number, glow sticks and safety pins any time on the day of the race from the Country Park Café from 9am onwards. We recommend that packs are collected at least 30 minutes prior to the race start time to avoid any delays in the race starting.
Participants are advised that they may run or walk the circuit; however, participants need to be fully aware that the race takes place in the dark. Therefore, it is strongly advised that runners and walkers take extreme care by controlling their pace and carrying a torch or wearing a head light. Although we will clear the route of trip hazards as much as possible, we cannot guarantee your complete safety and therefore it is vitally important that all competitors sign the disclaimer attached to the registration form. All participants take part at their own risk and we take no responsibility for injury caused through participating. Those refusing to sign a disclaimer will not be allowed to take part.

The event is taking place on Friday 31st October, more commonly referred to as Halloween. With this in mind, all participants can expect a few frights around the course.  Along the tracks and hidden in the woods will be Zombies and other Halloween based characters. The characters will be tasked to jump out, chase and scare participants as much as possible. However, at no point will they touch or harm the participants, so at no time should runners touch or harm them. Anybody touching a character will be disqualified and removed from the race and any harm caused will result in police action.

The Course

The course is 3 miles long and involves a mixture of surfaces, including grass, woodlands, pathways and mud!! The route is set around the Country Park Lake. Participants must be mindful of this and take extra care to stay away from any water. At no point does the route involve entering the water, but it does include a bridge over water. To help you around the circuit there will be course marshals who will all be wearing high visibility jackets and equipped with torches.  In addition, there will also be lots of signs spaced around the course which point participants in the right direction.
Route three, shown in red on the map below will be the chosen circuit for the Zombie Trail:
Age Restrictions

Anybody can enter this race. However, young people below the age of 14 must be accompanied throughout the race by an adult over the age of 21.
Dress Code

The recommended attire depends on whether you intend to run or walk the course. Runners need to wear suitable footwear for the types of surfaces mentioned above. A good quality running trainer is ideal. With regards to clothing, we recommend running in suitable sportswear designed for running. Please be aware that no foil blankets will be provided at the end of the race so bringing an extra layer of clothing for the start and end of the event is recommended.

Walkers should also wear suitable footwear for the surfaces mentioned above, this could include walking boots or wellington boots to cope with some of the muddier conditions. Those walking the course should wear warmer clothing depending on the weather forecast for the event.
Fancy dress is permitted for walkers and runners, but is worn at your own risk.
Storing Belongings

Participants are welcome to store one bag per person in the function room located at the rear of the Country Park Café. Please ensure that phones and keys are placed in a bag before handing them in to the storage area. A cloakroom attendant will be on hand to assist with your belongings. Please be aware that your belongings are left with us at your own risk and we can take no responsibility for lost or stolen items. On receipt of your personal belongings you will be given a raffle ticket which must be handed in to receive your items back. Anybody who loses their ticket may be asked to wait until all other belongings have been collected before theirs will be released.

Warm Up

Warming up properly for this workout will help you stay injury-free and is the easiest way to improve your race times. The warm-up is an important part of any workout, including running and walking, and one of the most important aspects of a good race. A good warm-up helps prepare the body to run hard, race fast, and will help make your workout easier and more productive
Before the race you are welcome to join in with a fun warm up led by the Melton Learning Hub’s sport and exercise tutors. This will take place 15 minutes prior to the race starting.

Training Programme

We recommend using the BUPA recommended training programme for a 5k runner. This running programme is a great way to get you started if you are not a regular runner. It will help you increase your fitness even if you don't have an event in mind.
The programme sets out a schedule of running three times a week on the following days: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. You can train on different days depending on when you have time, but you should keep the recommended rest days between training.
The programme can be found at:
http://www.bupa.co.uk/running/training/training-programmes/beginner-5km/
Other training programmes can be followed and those already accomplished at this level or above should continue to use their own routines.
