Oakham Christmas Lights Switch On, Karen-bryn Carter Neehuis Rutland Times Comment

Each Year Oakham Town Council Spend Over £16,000 on Christmas lights

Each year there is little improvement.

Each Year the Town Compliments it's self on a job done well.

I seriously believe they are death dumb and blind when it comes to listen
to public opinion.

At this weeks meeting I made a public deputation passing on public
comment, "the music and singing was good the lights and tree are crap"
thinking they might understand plain English.

After the meeting the Deputy Mayor Alf Dewis said no one speaks to me
and I lie. Lets hope he reads a residents comment posted on the Rutland
Times Web Page.

The Story that has been provided is not accurate, it says Mulled Wine
was provided at the Whipper Inn, Not true it was sold illegally under
the council gazebo by the tree. Of the Town Council don't mind
they have no licence to lose and won't incur a fine, that may be dished
out to the Whipper Inn.

The paper also refers to the bent tree calling it the Rotary Tree it has
not been the Rotary Tree for two years now, the town council gives
them the money and the gift it back to the town? No one knows
how much this years tree cost, looking at the mess I would suggest
there was no contribution from the Rotary and if they did they should
ask for a refund.

The company who subcontract the hanging the lights are robbing our town each year!

Can honestly say the Christmas lights and tree look terrible this year if not the worse ever.....no lights on the tree at the library ,no lights across the road down mill street...no lights further up the top end of town leaving it looking cold and off putting to visitors, when my children were you her we use to come down to see the lights and look forward to,the start of them going across the road from the no garage but now nothing perhaps you should have thought about the towns people a bit more your not really going to bring people to the town for shopping etc when it looks so dismal, perhaps you should take a leaf out of Melton Mowbray or Stamford lighting it feels really Christmassy in these places but not here it looks like the town just couldn't be bothered we seem to be getting less and less ,if it's a case of money shortage the. You should have got a poundland in Oakham you could have got more lights from there for less money..just a thought...the lights are a special part of Christmas for small children what a let down
