Claudia Riordan – Parish Council Election Candidate 2015 North Luffenham

Vote for Claudia Riordan – Parish Council Election Candidate 2015

Claudia RiordanI’m Claudia Riordan, and I am currently a Parish Councillor, having been co-opted onto the Council when a vacancy arose following the resignation of another Councillor in 2012. I have served on the finance subcommittee, where I was instrumental in changing the accounting procedures to provide greater transparency. As a member of the website sub-committee I have helped to develop the village website, and I worked closely with Tim Smith in overcoming various legal and practical difficulties to obtain a suitable location for the village defibrillator. I have now been encouraged by several residents to put myself forward for election to serve for a further term. I am a solicitor specialising in trust law, semi-retired but still practising on a part time basis.

We moved to North Luffenham nearly 30 years ago, when my husband set up a manufacturing business in Corby. We still consider ourselves hugely fortunate to have made our home in such a beautiful part of the country. Our two daughters attended the village school, and during that time I served as secretary of the school’s Parents and Friends Association.

When we arrived in the village, it had no community meeting place at all, and I was an active member of the steering committee that raised funds and worked with various statutory and charitable bodies to build the current community centre and to convert our village school to a community primary school. As a direct result of that initiative, the village now maintains various active clubs and associations, including the gardening, camera, art, and carpet bowls clubs, and a flourishing scout group.

Over recent years there have been suggestions that our village community recreational facilities should be extended, with a focus on the Oval, and perhaps involving improvements to the current cricket pavilion. The Oval is held in in trust for the benefit of the residents of North Luffenham, with the Parish Council as corporate trustee. As trustee, the Parish Council is obliged to manage the Oval in compliance with both the governing trust deed and the relevant legislation. If elected I would endeavour to apply my professional knowledge as a trust lawyer to ensure that this obligation is met at all times. I would welcome and support any initiative that benefits the village as a whole and has the support of the majority of the residents, provided that it is lawful, is achievable in practical and financial terms, and is demonstrably financially viable over the long term.
