Royal British Legion Table Top Sale First Event at Oakham Town Councils Community Centre

Royal British Legion Table Top Sale First Event at Oakham Town Councils Community Centre

Cllr Joyce Lucas organised the first event in what might Oakhams first community centre.
Keen to get the project of the ground Cllr Lucas named the building, Royce's Community Hub.
This was recently changed by the council to Oakham Town Council Community Centre even
though the council has not officially decided if there will be a community centre. At the
same meeting they voted not to move the council offices there. No one has done the sums.
The Clerk, The Mayor and Cllr Stubbs were always against the move. The town council is now paying business rates and insurance for two places. I have suggested we have a vote to see
if we are actually going ahead with a community centre? If the vote was yes I suggested a
committee made up of community and council reps and the employment of a hall manager.
I was asked how would we pay the £9,000 for the manager in the past it would have come
easily if the council had moved its offices it would have come from the money saved in
rent no longer paid. Now it would like most halls come from the lettings. I personally feel
our Mayor Cllr Alf Dewis wants this project to fail after all he is keeping quiet about the
meeting he had onsite with the Deputy Leader of Rutland County Council.

The building was not ready for public use, Cllr Lucas cleaned the loo's and our deputy
mayor Adam Lowe was seen smuggling fire extinguishers out of the council chamber and
offices so this event could happen. I assume that is why he was seen removing them?

I am hoping Oakham does get a community centre, it was good to see the building being used
today, disappointingly I am not permitted by the council to be involved in the working group overseeing the future of the old gym. This was one of two things I said I wanted to be involved
in once I returned to the council the other being the The Neighborhood Plan. Oakham
Town Council will decide in December if they are going ahead with the plan.
