Concert of Carols by Sir Malcolm Sargent with Burghley Voices with David Lee
Saturday, December 19th
There is a concert of carols by Sir Malcolm Sargent on Saturday 19th December at 7:30pm at St John's Church, off Red Lion Square, Stamford, (opposite ASK Italian Restaurant: Parking at Scotgate Public Car Park).
Many people will know that Sir Malcolm Sargent’s father was the organist at St. John’s Church in Stamford, and Malcolm also for a time. Fergus Black is bringing his chamber choir Burghley Voices to sing a selection of Sir Malcolm Sargent’s carols in the church on Saturday 19th December at 7:30pm.
They will be performing about a dozen of Sir Malcolm’s Christmas Carol arrangements - some English, some from the Far East, from Greece, Poland, and the Americas. There will be favourites, such as the Zither Carol, the Boar’s Head, and of course, Silent Night, as well as more unusual items, such as a Korean Lullaby and Mongolian Carol. The carols are all for unaccompanied choir, and were mostly written for the Royal Choral Society, many with words as well as music by Malcolm Sargent. They are beautifully written and very rewarding to sing, and to listen to.
The choir will be joined by the actor David Lee, who will be performing some readings to illustrate the carols.
There is no charge, and there are no advance tickets. There will be a paper retiring collection in aid of CLICSargent (the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Charity), and The Churches Conservation Trust, which cares for St John’s.
