Tilly Chisholm, a Lincolnshire schoolgirl, won a nationwide competition to design a special birthday cake to celebrate the historic occasion of The Queen’s 90th birthday.

Budding designers were asked by Waitrose to create and design the retailer’s official cake to celebrate The Queen’s birthday.

Tilly, age 9, sent in her design after her teacher challenged the whole of her year to draw a picture of a birthday cake fit for The Queen.

Tilly’s design features a gorgeous bejewelled gold crown, The Queen’s initials and a simple red balloon which Tilly included as she felt no birthday was complete without a balloon.

The cake is finished with festive red, white and blue bunting around the base.

Tilly’s design sits atop a delicious fruit cake which is made in Scotland.

The winning cake design was chosen by a panel which included celebrated cake maker Fiona Cairns, Bake Off finalist Martha Collison and organisers of The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations in May.

Fiona Cairns said: “We are delighted to be involved in decorating the cake to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday. It has been such an interesting project working on the design from the very beginning and throughout the competition we saw some beautiful and imaginative designs.

She added: ‘We were so pleased when Tilly’s design was announced as the winner.

We have taken the essence of her drawing, making special cutters for some of the elements to create the lovely decorations for the cake. Every part of the decoration is made by hand in our bakery in Leicestershire by our skilled team.

We feel proud to have been involved in helping to create a cake fit for a Queen!”

Tilly Chisholm, age 9, from Stamford said:  ‘I could not believe when they said my name as I never win anything! I cannot wait to see my cake on the shelves’.

The Waitrose Celebration Cake for Her Majesty’s Birthday will be available in Waitrose branches from 20th April priced £10.
