Stamford Apple Day Stamford Arts Centre 27 St. Marys Street Stamford PE9 2DL
Stamford Apple Day
Saturday, October 1st
Apple Identification, Apple Tasting and Produce, Environmental Groups, Honey & Juice, New College Catering, Fun & Games for children. This is the 13th annual Stamford Apple Day by the Stamford Community Orchard Group.
If you'd like to get an apple identified, ideally bring part of the branch with at least 3 leaves and 2 apples attached.
Usually it takes place in the ballroom.
Stamford hosts one of the country's largest Apple Day events, attracting over a thousand visitors on the day. This year is set to be bigger and better than ever! This is because the group is one step closer to finding the Stamford Pippin. The apple has been sent off for further investigation and local experts feel that this could be our biggest find in decades. Also, as always, the East of England Apples and Orchards Project will be bringing along many different varieties English apple. And their experts will be on-hand to identify the apples that people bring along on the day - hoping to find some of the long-lost Stamford apple varieties. SCOG's own gurus will be dispensing invaluable advice to people on how to sort out problems and look after the apple trees in their gardens.
As well as the apple identification there will be a tombola and lots of stalls selling apple related gifts and produce. There will also be fun and games such as pin the maggot on the apple and apple bobbing, for children big & small. A perfect day out for families.
SCOG is a Registered Charity (No.1115719) based in the Lincolnshire market town of Stamford. Our aim is to preserve the old orchards that still exist in the town, to establish new orchards and to rediscover old apple varieties. The Group has already planted and managed a Community Orchard in the town and has an exciting new site on Uffington Road where they are busy planting different varieties of fruit trees.

Oakham Town Council Failing To Communicate with Residents
Oakham Town Council Failing To Communicate with Residents
Early this year Oakham Town Council agreed to hold regular public meetings similar to The Annual Town Meeting the old time of the year residents can actually get to speak to their council about anything relating to the town and council.
The Town Council agreed to hold these meetings like so many things it agrees it fails to act upon.
The meetings were meant to give resident more input into the council and give the council an opportunity to showcase the little it has done for the residents it is meant to represent.
I have asked the council many times why these agreed meetings have not happened and so far I have not received a reply.
The town council has done very little for the community this year and so often it shows it is not interested in any input from residents it is meant to serve.

Oakham Late Night Christmas Shopping Event and Christmas Light Switch On
Oakham Late Night Christmas Shopping Event and Christmas Light Switch On
Mon 5 December 2016
16:00 – 21:00
After many years of requests the Town Council appears to have listened?
It is looking like there will be an official Christmas Light switch on when
shops and businesses are actually open.
I often asked the ex Clerk why this did not happen and he would say it
was to complicated to organise or words to that effect.
I don't know any of the details relating to the light switch on, why should I
know after all I am only a Town Councillor.
The working group who is responsible for this task fail to report anything to
council, I raised this issue at the last meeting perhaps they will produce a
report for the next council meeting to be held in October.
In the meantime confirmation of the event has been tweeted by Cllr Jasmine
Hopkins,
The Towns Christmas Tree and lights have looked fantastic ever since the Town Council
took over full responsibility back in 2012
In recent years residents set up a facebook page to get the town
a decent tree.
Oakham Mayor Adam Lowe went on TV and basically carried
out a great PR job for the council and then at the next meeting
suggested the residents reaction on facebook was an over kill.
I disagree the town council pays thousands pounds of residents
money to Lite ltd and each year they sub contract and provide
a very poor service.
That year (2014) a local garden centre kindly donated a new tree and the defective tree was
tied to a flag pole at Cllr Vince Howard's Fire Station decorated with traditional bulbs
it did not look to bad in its new home.
