Rutland County Councillors have approved the introduction of an annual charge for green waste services, to come into effect from April 2018.
It will cost £5 more than Stamford, I wonder like the utilities could residents switch to a better value council?
Proposals to introduce an annual charge covering the cost of green waste collection were discussed at Full Council (Monday 11th September), having been approved by Cabinet in August.
Councillors voted in favour of recommendations which will see an annual charge introduced from next year and setting the charge at £35 per green bin, per year.
The charge will help to reduce the overall cost of collecting and disposing of Rutland’s waste, which has risen to almost £2million per annum.
“As a Council, it’s important we look practically at non-statutory services like green waste collection and make sure they are sustainable at a time when we’re experiencing unprecedented pressures in areas such as children's services, fostering and adult social care. We cannot compromise on the delivery of vital statutory services that protect and care for residents by overspending on non-statutory services, and must consider different ways to balance our books effectively. We feel that a charge equal to around £2.90 per month for green waste services is fair and reasonable when the overall cost of collecting and disposing of all waste in Rutland has now reached almost £2million a year.”Councillor Alan Walters, Portfolio Holder for the Environment
Nationally, more than 70% of UK councils are expected to charge for green waste collection by the end of 2019.
Rutland’s scheme will be subscription-based for those who choose to join, with an annual renewal process at the beginning of each year. There will also be a 25% discount for anyone on local Council Tax support.
The charge will not be applied to general household waste or recycling and there will be no change to how regularly resident’s bins are collected.
