New for this year’s Melton Victorian Festival – historic church hosts home-made Christmas wreath competition and display

St Johns Church
Melton’s Catholic Church of St. John’s, on Thorpe End, opens its doors as part of the Victorian Festival for the first time. The church is running a competition to see who can make the best Christmas wreath, with prizes in four categories: Age under 11; age 11-16, adult, and business. All wreaths will be on display in the church for the three days of the Victorian Festival: Friday 30 November - Sunday 2 December. Anyone can make a wreath – children can do simple ones using a paper plate, businesses can make one to show their product or service; they can be knitted, knotted or made from coat hangers, clothes pegs, buttons or even marshmallows! It costs £1 to enter a wreath in the competition. They may be brought to St. John’s church between 11 am and 1 pm on the Saturday before the event, 24 October. For more information, or to arrange a different drop off time, please ring 07790 631635.

The church will also be decorated with lights, and visitors may light a candle and say a prayer for someone they love. St. John’s church was built in 1839 and is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the Diocese still in use for worship. The famous Victorian architect A.W.N. Pugin was involved in its design. As part of the “Open Church” and display, guided tours will be available. Admission is free, and on Saturday 1 December there will be refreshments and stalls in the Museum across the road. Come along and see this lovely historic church with its display of wreaths. Why not do a “churches trail” and visit all three open churches in the town?

At the Christmas Wreath Festival at St John's Church, the Resonations String Trio will be performing works by Beethoven & Bach as well as popular classics and Christmas surprises, on Sat 1 Dec. Two performances, 12 & 2 pm. Donations welcome.   https://www.facebook.com/Resonations/
