People should not be browbeaten into complying with the new rules on face masks, a Leicestershire police boss has said.

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Rupert Matthews made the remarks on social media in response to a tweet which questioned how the new mandatory rules on face masks, following the discovery of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant, could be maintained.

The Conservative commissioner said he was not in favour of forcing people to wear masks, and questioned how severe a threat Omicron actually was to people.
