Oakham War Memorial Remembrance Sunday Morning 11am 13th November 2022

Oakham War Memorial Remembrance Sunday Morning 11am  13th November 2022

A group of people gathered at the war memorial to pay their respects at the war memorial

This is not an organised event, that follows this afternoon with the Rutland County event.

For many years not many people have stopped by the war memorial in the morning at 11am At the start of the covid lock downs a group turned up and have done so now for the last three years. It is a nice event because it is not a civic organised event and people pay their own personal respect in any way they want to. Paul Beech lays a wreath and reads a poem and others place their poppies around the church yard. Hopefully this continue. I heard an organisation mentioned and how they should organise it. Personally I hope not. And like many who attended this morning I think it would be good for residents to know they can just pop along for the two minutes silence each year at 11am.

There are others who place their poppies at sunrise.

At 11am the war memorial is also surrounded by others remembering within All Saints Church and Oakham School Chapel, the chapel is a memorial chapel to former boys lost in the wars.

I will mention the state of the memorial garden, the maintenance of the church yard is meant to be carried out by Oakham Town Council at the moment it is a disgrace. It looks like Oakham in Bloom have given up looking after the memorial garden for the town council
