Rutland's Remembrance Day Passes Peacefully Amidst Increased Security

Amidst heightened security measures, Rutland's Remembrance Day commemorations unfolded peacefully, honouring the sacrifices of those who have fallen in service to their country. The town's High Street and Church Street were closed off, with the county's new gritting lorries and trucks strategically positioned to block access.

The enhanced security measures, implemented in response to recent incidents of vandalism targeting war memorials across the United Kingdom, were met with understanding from residents. "It's important to take precautions to protect our memorials, especially on a day like Remembrance Sunday," remarked one local.

Despite the increased presence of security personnel, the atmosphere of the day remained solemn and respectful. Residents gathered at the War Memorial in Oakham, paying their respects to the fallen and laying wreaths in their memory.

The sombre mood was punctuated by the appearance of Pro-Palestine stickers around the town. These stickers, bearing the message "Free Palestine," served as a reminder of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the plight of Palestinian people.

The juxtaposition of Remembrance Day commemorations and the Pro-Palestine stickers sparked conversations among residents. Some expressed concerns that the stickers could detract from the focus on honouring fallen soldiers, while others saw them as a legitimate expression of support for a different cause.

The appearance of Pro-Palestine stickers added a layer of complexity to the day's proceedings, prompting discussions about the balance between honouring the fallen and expressing support for other causes.

This year I decided not to photograph the wreath laying at the war memorial. I personally feel the true purpose of remembrance Sunday is more important than local dignitaries laying wreaths.
