Leicester Market is Getting a Makeover: Traders Find New Home in Green Dragon Square

Leicester's iconic market, a cornerstone of the city's vibrant culture for over 700 years, is undergoing a much-needed refurbishment. To keep the market spirit alive during this transformation, traders have been temporarily relocated to Green Dragon Square, just behind the Corn Exchange. But how has this move impact the market and its beloved community?

For decades, Leicester Market has served as a bustling haven for local businesses and shoppers alike. However, the historic site began to show signs of wear and tear, prompting the City Council to invest £7.5 million in a comprehensive refurbishment. The project aims to modernise the market while preserving its unique character, focusing on improved accessibility, enhanced facilities, and a more vibrant atmosphere.

Since November 2023, traders have set up shop in Green Dragon Square, occupying 48 stalls and 10 container units under a weatherproof canopy. While the new location lacks the historical charm of the original market, it offers a convenient and covered space for customers to continue their shopping sprees.

The relocation has garnered mixed reactions from traders. Some welcome the change, appreciating the opportunity to operate in a well-organised and sheltered environment. Others, however, face challenges attracting customers unfamiliar with the new location. Concerns about footfall and the impact on business income are not uncommon.

Despite the initial teething troubles, both traders and the City Council remain optimistic about the future. Marketing campaigns are underway to raise awareness of the new location, and support initiatives are being implemented to help traders navigate the transition. The refurbishment is expected to be completed by Christmas 2024, at which point the market will return to its original home, boasting a revitalised look and feel.

Leicester Market is much more than just a collection of stalls; it's a social hub, a cultural anchor, and a vital part of the city's identity. The temporary relocation, though presenting challenges, offers a glimpse into the market's resilience and adaptability. As the refurbishment progresses, one can't help but feel excited about the prospect of a renewed and thriving market, ready to captivate generations to come.
