Leicestershire Police Officer to Face Gross Misconduct Hearing

Leicestershire Police Constable Hiron Miah is scheduled to attend a gross misconduct hearing next month on Wednesday, May 1st, at 10 am at Force Headquarters.

PC Miah faces allegations of breaching the force's standards of professional behaviour in three areas: discreditable conduct, confidentiality, and honesty and integrity.

The specific accusations involve eight separate incidents between October and November 2022. It is alleged that PC Miah accessed confidential information on police systems without a legitimate policing purpose or lawful authority. This reportedly violated the force's information management procedures.

If proven, these allegations could be classified as gross misconduct, potentially leading to dismissal.

The hearing will determine the validity of the accusations and the appropriate consequences, if any.

Rutland Residents Face Renewed Flooding and Classic Cycle Race Cancelled

Rutland Residents Face Renewed Flooding and Classic Cycle Race Cancelled

Rutland residents awoke to a disheartening sight this morning – rising floodwaters once again inundating parts of the county. After a night of heavy rain, several villages found themselves underwater, continuing the recent trend of flooding that has plagued the area.

This latest deluge has caused significant disruption, with reports of flooded roads and properties.

Adding to the disappointment, the iconic Rutland CiCLE Classic, a much-anticipated cycling race held annually for the past 18 years, has been forced to cancel due to the unsafe course conditions. This marks the first time in the event's history that it has been unable to run.

The Oakham Canal, thanks in no small part to the dedication of its volunteer crew, is no longer just a fair-weather destination.

The Oakham Canal, thanks in no small part to the dedication of its volunteer crew, is no longer just a fair-weather destination. Once hampered by muddy paths during wetter periods, the canal is now much more accessible year-round thanks to the hard work of these local heroes.

The Melton and Oakham Waterways Society, the driving force behind the canal's restoration, has actively recruited volunteers for path maintenance and improvement projects.  These volunteers have put in the hours to ensure the canal-side paths are well-maintained and less susceptible to the wet weather. This means that walkers, cyclists, and anyone else who enjoys spending time by the water can now experience the Oakham Canal even when the skies aren't cooperating.

It's a testament to the community spirit and the commitment of the volunteers that the canal can now be enjoyed throughout the year. So, next time you're in Oakham, take a moment to appreciate the Oakham Canal and the tireless work of the volunteers who have made it a more accessible amenity.

Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic Washed Out Due to Flooding 2024

Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic Washed Out Due to Flooding

The much-anticipated 18th edition of the Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic, Britain's only UCI international one-day race for men, was sadly cancelled today due to severe flooding in Rutland and Leicestershire villages.

The race, scheduled for today, April 28th, 2024, was set to see over 170 riders tackle the challenging 185km route across the picturesque countryside. With cyclists like Joe Blackmore, who has dominated the continental scene this year, registered to compete, the event promised to be an exciting display of athleticism.

However, heavy rains in recent days caused rivers to burst their banks, flooding villages along the planned course. Race organisers, prioritizing the safety of riders and spectators alike, made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

“We are incredibly disappointed to have to call off the race,” said Race Director Colin Clews. “We understand this is frustrating news for riders, spectators, and everyone involved in the event. However, the safety of everyone is our top concern, and the current conditions simply wouldn't allow for a safe race.”

Organisers are currently exploring options for rescheduling the race later in the season. They will provide updates on their website and social media channels.

CiCLE Classic Start Delayed Due to Flooding, Organisers Plan New Route

The Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic, a prestigious international cycling race scheduled to start this morning, has been delayed due to severe flooding in the Rutland and Leicestershire areas. Areas originally planned for the route are currently under water, making the race unsafe and impossible to proceed as planned.

According to race officials, the start time has been pushed back to 12:30 pm to allow for a revised route to be finalised. Organisers are currently meeting to determine a new, shorter course that maintains the start and finish locations in Oakham and Melton Mowbray, respectively.

The extreme weather conditions have caused significant disruption, and the revised route will likely avoid the flooded sections. This may lead to a shorter race distance, with further details expected to be announced shortly.

Cyclists and spectators are advised to monitor the CiCLE Classic website and social media channels for the latest updates on the revised route and start time.

Former Oakham Town Councillor Lorna Grey Remembered for Dedication to Charity

There was a misunderstanding about the timing of this post. Allan Grey has now shared his own tribute to Lorna, So I'm pleased to repost this one with his blessing.

My condolences go out to Mr. Grey and the entire family during this difficult time.

Former Oakham Town Councillor Lorna Grey Remembered for Dedication to Charity

Many in the Oakham community are mourning the loss of Lorna Grey, a former town councillor who passed away peacefully in hospital.

Cllr Lorna Grey (2014)

While many may recall her service on the council (2014), Lorna's true legacy lies in her unwavering commitment to charitable causes.

Children's charities were particularly close to Lorna's heart.  She volunteered tirelessly, ensuring the well-being of young people in need. Residents of Oakham will also remember her from the Mind Charity Shop, where she brightened the days of those shopping.

The pandemic cast a long shadow, and Oakham wasn't immune. But amidst the worry, a beacon of calm shone at the Rutland Late Night pharmacy. There, amongst the shelves stocked with essential medicines, stood Lorna, a stalwart volunteer steward.

Her dedication extended beyond these roles. Lorna was a long-standing member of the Lions Club of Rutland, alongside her husband Allan Grey. Mr. Grey, a Rutland Times columnist who often affectionately referred to Lorna as "The Lovely Lady" in his articles, is sure to feel her loss deeply.

My condolences go out to Mr. Grey and the entire family during this difficult time.  Lorna's compassion and selflessness will be deeply missed by many in the Oakham community.

News of Lorna Grey's passing brought a wave of memories, particularly from my time working at Tesco. Lorna was a regular customer, and her visits always involved the same delightful routine.

She'd arrive at my checkout, invariably with her favourite cake and a bottle of prosecco. But before we got to the pleasantries of ringing up her purchases, there'd be a little moan – a playful grumble that was as much a part of her visit as the cake itself. "why is there none  of Allan's Rhubarb Gin"?

One particular moan that sticks out in my mind is the "saga of the broken pastry case."

Those little moments, along with her love for cake and bubbles, are what I'll remember most about Lorna. She wasn't just a customer; she was a reminder that even the most ordinary interactions can leave a lasting impression.

Make Your Voice Heard: Oakham Town Meeting

The Oakham Town Meeting is a chance for residents to come together and discuss the issues that matter most to them. It's important to remember that this is not a council meeting – it's a public forum where you can directly raise your concerns with the Mayor and fellow residents.

Open Discussion for All

The Mayor will chair the meeting and provide opening remarks. Following this, the floor will be open for residents to speak on any topic related to Oakham. This is your opportunity to voice your opinions, ask questions, and share your hopes for the town.

Engaging with Local Representatives

While attendance by police representatives and Oakham Councillors from both councils has been less frequent in recent years, their presence is always welcome. This meeting provides a valuable platform for open communication between residents and those who serve our community.

Beyond Popularity Polls

Public attendance should not be seen as a referendum on the Mayor's performance. The Town Meeting's true purpose is to foster a sense of community engagement and ensure that the voices of Oakham residents are heard.

Join the Conversation!

All residents are encouraged to attend the upcoming Oakham Town Meeting. Let's work together to build a better Oakham for everyone.
