Peterborough Pride celebrations were marred by a brief incident this afternoon after a man was arrested for making threats to kill and attempting to flee police.
The man made comments about wanting to murder someone, specifically mentioning police officers, while attending the event starting point in Stanley Park, he produced a claw hammer. Officers were alerted and, with the assistance of armed police units, apprehended the suspect.
A short chase ensued through Broadway, culminating in the man's detainment outside the Tesco store.
The arrest caused a temporary delay to the scheduled Pride March. Officers conducted a search for a hammer discarded by the suspect during his escape attempt.
Thankfully no one was hurt, the march was able to proceed after the search was completed.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance at public gatherings.
It is also a testament to the swift action taken by law enforcement to ensure the safety of attendees.
I had chatted with the man, moments before he produced a hammer. I hope he gets the help he needs.
