A Tribute to the Merchant Navy: Oakham to Host Flag Raising Ceremony

Residents of Oakham are invited to join a special flag-raising ceremony to commemorate Merchant Navy Day 2024. The event will take place outside Oakham Castle on Tuesday, September 3rd from 10:15 AM to 10:45 AM.

The ceremony will honour the countless men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Merchant Navy, a vital component of the United Kingdom's maritime industry. The day marks the anniversary of the torpedoing of the SS Athenia in 1939, a tragic event that highlighted the crucial role of merchant seafarers during wartime.

In recent years, Merchant Navy Day has gained significant recognition as a way to raise awareness of the ongoing importance of this often-overlooked sector. The Seafarers' Charity has spearheaded the "Fly the Red Ensign" campaign to encourage individuals and organizations to show their support for merchant seafarers.

Rutland's Armed Forces Champion, Cllr David Wilby, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the vital contribution of merchant seafarers to the UK's economy: "It is essential that we acknowledge and celebrate the Merchant Navy community, both past and present. Their dedication and sacrifice should not be forgotten."

The Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the historical significance of the Merchant Navy: "The Merchant Navy played a crucial role in both World Wars, and their sacrifices should never be forgotten. We must remember that our island nation relies heavily on the Merchant Navy for our food, fuel, and trade."

The flag-raising ceremony in Oakham provides an opportunity for residents to come together and show their appreciation for the men and women who work tirelessly at sea.
