Barnsdale Gardens Faces Closure Threat Over Proposed Solar Farm

Barnsdale Gardens, the renowned Rutland tourist attraction and horticultural haven, faces an uncertain future as plans for a large-scale solar farm next door threaten its viability.  Nick Hamilton, owner of the internationally recognised gardens, warns that the proposed development could force its closure after over 40 years of operation.

Econergy has submitted plans to Rutland County Council for a 67-hectare solar farm in Exton, adjacent to Barnsdale Gardens.  Hamilton argues that the anticipated drop in visitor numbers due to the change in landscape would render his business unsustainable.  He also expresses concerns about increased flooding risks and the potential loss of wildlife.

"I think definitely if the planning gets passed, then there is no question that this will shut," Hamilton stated.  He believes the impact of 168 acres of solar panels on the fields bordering his property will significantly reduce visitor numbers, making closure unavoidable.

Hamilton explained his reasoning, saying, "The reason I would pre-empt that and close would be because the last thing I want to do is end up debted up to the eyeballs, losing my business and being flung out on the street with absolutely nothing."  He emphasised the devastating impact this would have not only on himself but also on his long-serving staff, some of whom have been with him for nearly 40 years.

Barnsdale Gardens holds a significant place in horticultural history, having featured prominently in the BBC series "Gardeners' World" and earning international and national acclaim.  Hamilton describes it as "an absolute jewel in the crown of Rutland."

While acknowledging the need for alternative energy sources, Hamilton argues that such developments should not come at any cost.  He suggests that the potential damage to established attractions like Barnsdale Gardens must be carefully considered in the pursuit of renewable energy goals.  The future of this beloved Rutland landmark now rests with the Rutland County Council and their decision on the proposed solar farm.
