Oakham in Bloom Seeks New Treasurer, Mulls Future of Wicker RAF Spitfire Battle of Britain Memorial

Oakham in Bloom Seeks New Treasurer, Mulls Future of Wicker Spitfire

Oakham in Bloom, the dedicated group responsible for the town's vibrant floral displays, is facing two key challenges: finding a new treasurer and determining the future location of the Wicker Spitfire.

The search for a treasurer comes after the passing of Paul Buxton, a dedicated volunteer and former Oakham Town Councillor, who served the organisation faithfully. His loss has left a significant gap, and Oakham in Bloom is now appealing to the community for a new financial guardian.

Sheila Cunningham, Chair of Oakham in Bloom, emphasised the importance of the role and reassured potential volunteers that it's not an overly demanding task. "We are in desperate need of a treasurer," she explained. "I know they're highly sought-after special people. If someone can join us, is at all interested, it's not arduous. We don't have like regular fees or whatever, we have monthly meetings, doing a sort of report for that, looking after our bank account and building society account, and yeah, we just need someone to join us. So if anyone's just interested, please contact me."

Essentially, the role involves managing the organisation's finances, providing monthly reports, and overseeing bank and building society accounts. Anyone with a good head for figures and a desire to contribute to the community is encouraged to step forward.

Alongside the search for a treasurer, Oakham in Bloom is also considering relocating the Wicker Spitfire. Currently positioned by the bypass, the Spitfire, is proving difficult to maintain in its current location. The group is exploring alternative sites that would allow for easier upkeep and ensure the Spitfire remains a prominent feature of Oakham's landscape.

If you have a knack for numbers and a passion for your community, or if you have ideas for the Wicker Spitfire, please reach out to Sheila Cunningham and offer your support. Oakham in Bloom welcomes anyone willing to help keep Oakham blooming.
