Oakham Gears Up for Historic 2025 CiCLE Classic
This coming Sunday, April 27th, the market town of Oakham in Rutland will be buzzing with the energy of elite cycling as it hosts the start and finish of the 2025 Sigma Sports/Schwalbe UK Rutland-Melton CiCLE Classic. The 20th year of the race marks a significant milestone in British cycling history, becoming the longest-ever running one-day international race on UK soil.
First held in 2005, the CiCLE Classic has carved a unique place in the cycling calendar, renowned for its challenging terrain, including off-road sectors, and its vibrant spectator atmosphere. However, the journey to this year's event has not been without its hurdles. Major roadworks around Melton Mowbray have necessitated late and significant alterations to the traditional route, which typically culminates in Melton.
Race director Colin Clews expressed his disappointment with the late notification of road restrictions by Leicestershire County Council, stating, "Despite the race plans being known to Leicestershire County Council for several months, it has come as a significant blow that only now has the race organisation been informed of restrictions upon road usage which pose a threat to the race’s viability."
Thankfully, Rutland County Council stepped in to ensure the race could proceed, agreeing to host the finish in Oakham, alongside the already planned start. A Leicestershire County Council spokesperson explained their position, citing the ongoing construction of the North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (NEMMDR) and the need to minimise disruption for local road users.
Despite the route changes, the spirit and excitement surrounding the CiCLE Classic remain undimmed. The race continues to draw significant international interest, with teams from The Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, and, for the first time, Italy, joining 30 British squads. This international participation underscores the race's economic and sporting importance to the region.
Spectator Hotspots:
The CiCLE Classic is renowned for being incredibly spectator-friendly, offering numerous opportunities to witness the action. This year, with the start and finish in Oakham, the viewing possibilities are even greater. Here’s a guide to some key locations:
START - Oakham Town Centre (from 9:50 am): Experience the pre-race buzz with team presentations and interviews on the podium, all while enjoying refreshments from local outlets. The race starts at 11:00 am near the Rutland Enterprise Park entrance on Ashwell Road after a neutralised section.
Wymondham (11:20 - 12:15 & approx. 15:00): This village offers a remarkable FIVE viewing opportunities within a short timeframe as the race loops through. The Berkeley Arms and the Windmill are prime locations to witness three Hot Spot sprints on the climb. Be aware of road closures in the village around these times.
The 'Mataberg' Sector (viewing point at Glebe Road): While the off-road sector itself is closed to spectators, the challenging final climb back to Glebe Road, near the village centre, promises exciting viewing.
Owston & Burrough on the Hill (12:50 - 14:30 approx.): These villages are central to the race's circuitous route, offering multiple passages. Owston is known for its lively atmosphere, BBQ, and the "Kwaremont" Belgian beer bar, while Grant’s Free House in Burrough on the Hill provides a more relaxed viewing setting.
Oakham Town Centre (Sprint & FINISH - approx. 12:30 & 15:35): Catch the Oakham Wines sprint earlier in the race and then witness the thrilling finale back in the High Street. Be aware of significant traffic disruption in Oakham between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Cold Overton Hill (approx. 12:45 & later passages): A prime location to witness the King of the Hills climbs.
'Somerberg' (Bruces Lane) (approx. 12:50 & later passages): For the ultimate CiCLE Classic experience, head to this challenging sector.
Stapleford Park (approx. 14:45): Witness the riders traverse the new off-road sectors within the beautiful parkland.
'Barleyberg' Climb (approx. 15:25): Enjoy extensive views across Rutland Water as the riders tackle this newly resurfaced climb.
Important Information for Spectators:
Road Closures: Be prepared for rolling road closures along the route as the race approaches. Allow ample time to travel between viewing points.
Parking: Park responsibly and well off the road, especially on narrow lanes around Owston and Burrough on the Hill. In Owston, utilise designated car parks and follow marshal instructions.
Refreshments: Hot and cold drinks and snacks will be available at various locations, including Oakham Town Centre and the lively BBQ at Owston.
