Rutland County Council hosted a commemorative flag-raising event at Oakham Castle grounds to observe Merchant Navy Day.

The service brought together local residents, council representatives, and community figures to honour the courageous men and women of the Merchant Navy.

Those attending watched the ceremonial hoisting of the Red Duster the official flag of the British Merchant Navy.

Observed annually across the UK on September 3rd, Merchant Navy Day marks the anniversary of the sinking of the SS Athenia in 1939, the first British merchant ship lost in World War II.

The local tribute serves to recognise both the heavy historical sacrifices made by merchant seafarers and their ongoing role in keeping global supply lines open.
