Auction of Victoria Hall Oakham Postponed Due to Legal Delays
The planned auction of one of Oakham’s most prominent historic landmarks has been put on hold.
Victoria Hall, situated on the High Street in Rutland, was scheduled to go under the hammer on Tuesday, October 28, via property auctioneers BTG Eddisons.
However, the sale was deferred shortly before bidding was set to commence at 11:00 AM.
According to statements from the hall's trustees, the decision to postpone was made “to allow further time for the necessary legal matters relating to the proposed sale to be completed”.
A revised date for the rescheduled auction has not yet been announced.
The decision to put Victoria Hall up for sale earlier this month came following years of growing financial complications and administrative challenges.
Over recent years, the venue relied on multiple financial grants from Oakham Town Council to remain operational.
Facing rising maintenance and operating overheads, the registered charity's trustees concluded that continuing to manage the hall as a community-run venue was no longer financially sustainable.
The early 19th-century Grade II listed building covers approximately 6,652 sq. ft. and has served for decades as a focal point for local craft fairs, social gatherings, private events, and public functions.
What Happens to the Proceeds?
Guided at a starting price of over £55,000 with previous commercial listings guiding up to £225,000 the sale remains subject to regulatory oversight.
Under statutory rules governing charitable assets, all net proceeds generated from the eventual sale must be directed toward charitable purposes.
The precise allocation of funds will require formal review and approval from the Charity Commission before any funds are disbursed.
Prospective buyers and local residents await further guidance from BTG Eddisons and the building’s trustees regarding when the legal pack will be finalised and when the new auction date will be set.
