All Saints' Church in Oakham to Close for Two Months for Lighting Upgrade

All Saints' Church in Oakham to Close for Two Months for Lighting Upgrade

All Saints' Church in Oakham will undergo a significant two-month closure in the new year to install a much-needed new lighting system. The project, funded by a successful £110,000 fundraising campaign, aims to replace the church's aging lights, which have forced parishioners to resort to reading hymnals by torchlight.

The closure will commence on January 2, 2025, and is expected to last until March 9, 2025. During this period, Sunday services will be relocated to Oakham School's chapel, while funerals will be directed to other churches within the Oakham ministry area.

Rev. Stephen Griffiths expressed his gratitude for the community's support, stating, "Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, the community, and grant-making charities, we are able to upgrade the church's lighting to the latest specification. This will significantly enhance the light levels for worshippers, the choir, and various community groups that utilize All Saints'."

The new lighting system will not only improve visibility but also contribute to a more sustainable future by reducing energy consumption. It will also offer greater flexibility for lighting different areas of the church, accommodating various gatherings.

The congregation has already raised £100,000 towards the project and plans to host two music events in the early part of next year to cover the remaining costs.

While the church building will be closed for renovations, the west doors will remain open between 9 am and 4 pm most days, allowing visitors to light candles, say prayers, and collect the weekly newsletter.

This upgrade marks a significant step towards ensuring All Saints' Church continues to serve the Oakham community for many years to come.
