Angelic Inspiration: 'Solace' Glass Wings Bring Light and Hope to Peterborough Cathedral

Peterborough Cathedral is currently hosting a truly ethereal sight: "Solace," a towering glass sculpture of angel wings designed to be a profound space for reflection and hope. On display until December 1, 2025, this luminous artwork offers a moment of light and contemplation to all who visit the historic site.

Created by renowned artist Layne Rowe, the "Solace" sculpture is a breathtaking feat of glass artistry.

  • What It Is: The installation features a pair of magnificent 10-foot angel wings.

  • The Craftsmanship: The scale is matched by the incredible detail; each wing is composed of over 100 individually hot-sculpted glass feathers. This meticulous process results in a structure that appears simultaneously strong and infinitely fragile, playing beautifully with the light within the Cathedral's soaring architecture.

"Solace" was originally created during the pandemic as a powerful symbol intended to provide comfort and light during a time of global uncertainty. Its purpose remains vital today: to offer visitors a dedicated space for remembrance and a moment of calm and reflection.

The wings carry deep symbolic meaning, representing:

  • Freedom

  • Fragility

  • Strength

  • Protection

Cathedral officials have noted that the sculpture’s placement is currently in a temporary location to accommodate the festive atmosphere of the ongoing Christmas Market. However, even in its adjusted position, the light refracting through the glass creates a serene and powerful focal point.

The "Solace" sculpture is a key feature of the Cathedral's autumn and early winter programming and will be on public display through December 1, 2025. It provides a unique opportunity to witness contemporary art in conversation with centuries of sacred history.

Peterborough Cathedral is generally open for visitors:

  • Monday to Saturday: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  • Sunday: 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Visitors are strongly advised to check the Cathedral's website before arriving, as opening times and access can change due to services and special events, such as the Christmas Market currently underway.
