Right, all these grim defences of Jeremy Clarkson have driven me to do the unthinkable: share an article by Dan Hodges. He's right: we're going backwards, and the rise of Ukip has a lot to do with it. The other day I had a spat with the Times' Tim Montgomerie, who defended Ukip MEP Roger Helmer's homophobia with these words: "He's a principled traditionalist and far from a hateful man."
