Every two years the great hall at Oakham Castle becomes is an operational court room for the morning.
The morning started with a church service at All Saints Church Oakham.
The prosecutor was late and the judge told him of publicly.
The first case:
Edward Campbell aged 28 had previously been found guilty of causing serious injury to a female motorist whilst drunk.
Mr Campbell was driving his van the wrong way down a one way street Abbey Street Market Harborough whne he collided with a Mini. Although he remained on the scene and help
the victim he first lied to the police about who was driving the van, he said a person had stolen
his van and he was chasing it from the pub.
Mr Campbell has a previous drink drive conviction.
The Judge gave a suspended sentence for one year and ordered 250 hours unpaid work
and a 6 month curfew, she disqualified him from driving for two years and ordered he
take an advanced driving test before his full licence could be returned.
The second case:
Phillip Tompkin aged 21 who had been found guilty of being in possession of 360 indecent
images of children between the age of 6 - 8.
He was ordered to attend a 3 years accredited sexual offenders program and 10 rehabilitation days.
The third case:
John Sharp aged 72 a former treasurer of The Church of St James the Greater Leicester had been
convicted of theft and fraud.
Mr Sharp had run a number of finance companies, acquired a number of buy to let properties and owned the Old Greyhound Pub.
Liquidators of the pub business alerted the church of its suspicions.
A long police investigation found Mr Sharp had stolen a total of £103,576.72 from the church
he had done this by forging signatures including the vicars.
He has since almost repaid all the money he stole.
He was sentenced to two years in prison to serve one and the second on licence for all three charges
to be concurrent.
