Kearns' Faux Pas: Forgetting the Dragon and Lunar New Year

Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Melton, sparked online discussion after failing to acknowledge Lunar New Year once again, via her social media posts. The oversights, particularly given her position as a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee since March 2020. She is also on the steering committee of the China Research Group, the first female Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, has ignited conversation around cultural sensitivity and understanding the significance of the holiday.

While Kearns' has offered well wishes to those celebrating many other worldwide festivals, it is notably that her social media accounts don't mention any reference to the Lunar New Year or the Year of the Dragon, which began on January 22nd, 2024. This omission stands in contrast to greetings shared by many other British politicians and public figures, who extended their well wishes to the Chinese and East Asian communities celebrating the holiday.

The Year of the Dragon in Chinese astrology is associated with power, ambition, and good luck. Dragons are revered creatures in Chinese mythology, symbolising strength, leadership, and innovation. Understanding these cultural connotations adds context to the potential implications of Kearns' oversight.

Some view the MP's forgetfulness as a harmless oversight, while others see it as a missed opportunity to connect with the sizable Chinese community in the UK and demonstrate cultural awareness. The incident has reignited discussions about the importance of inclusivity and understanding different cultural traditions, particularly for those holding positions of public influence.

It's important to note that Kearns has not publicly commented on the reasons behind the omissions. Whether it was an unintentional oversight or a deliberate decision, the incident has sparked a wider conversation about cultural sensitivity and the importance of recognizing significant holidays celebrated by diverse communities.

As we move forward, it's crucial to remember the importance of cultural understanding and inclusivity. Recognising and celebrating significant holidays like Lunar New Year is not just a matter of courtesy, but also a way to foster connections and build bridges between communities. Perhaps this incident can serve as a learning opportunity, reminding us all of the importance of cultural sensitivity and mindful communication, especially for those in positions of leadership.
