OPEN DAY AT FREEMASONS’ HALL, LEICESTER
Saturday 9
th
JUNE 2012
Just up from the Railway station on London Road in Leicester is a beautiful white Georgian
building. You may have passed it and assumed it to be a solicitor’s or accountant’s office… but it is
in fact the home to the Leicestershire and Rutland Freemasons, and on 9
th
June they are opening
the doors to this wonderful building and inviting the public to see behind it’s facade.
Freemasonry is in the news at the moment as this 300 year old organisation, long thought to be
surrounded with mystery, is working hard to dispel the myths. In March this year, an independent
report ‘The Future of Freemasonry’ was published, with an aim to starting an open and transparent
conversation with the public. In particular, the report highlights that Freemasonry acts as a
'constant', providing members with a unique combination of friendship, belonging and structure,
with many Masons saying they have made valuable lifelong friendships. The report also highlights
the importance that Freemasonry places on charitable giving, the part that many Freemasons play
in their local communities and the central role of the family.
For anyone who has any interest in Freemasonry at all, has any questions they want answering, or
just wants to see inside the Grade II listed building, the Open Day is the perfect opportunity to find
out more.
The  Provincial Grand Master of Leicestershire and Rutland,  David Hagger says “We are really
excited about this opportunity to welcome the public back into Freemasons’ Hall for our first Open
Day for 14 years. We are very proud of our Headquarters and look forward to welcoming the
community, and help better inform them about the Hall or Freemasonry in general.”
Throughout the day, 45 minute escorted tours of the building will be conducted, allowing visitors to
access  the Masonic Rooms, with senior members on hand, to hear of the symbolism, history and
the practice of Freemasonry. There will be  likewise  a chance to learn more about the Masonic
charity work in the local community and to see the extensive Wedding, Banqueting and Function
room facilities within the Hall. Freemasons’ Hall is also home to one of the finest Masonic
Museums in the country, with artefacts dating back to the 17th Century.
Everyone is welcome, with free tours at Freemasons’ Hall, 78 London Road, Leicester LE2 0RA
starting at 09:30 hours, every 15 minutes up until 13:30. No booking necessary.
