Learn, Laugh, Live, Inside the Rutland u3a Monthly Meetings

Learn, Laugh, Live, Inside the Rutland u3a Monthly Meetings

For those in their "Third Age" that rewarding period of life after full-time employment and raising a family—Rutland u3a offers one of the most vibrant social and educational hubs in the county. While the organisation is famous for its wide array of smaller interest groups (ranging from Pickleball to French Discussion), the Monthly Meeting serves as the beating heart of the community.

It is here that the entire membership comes together to catch up, discover new hobbies, and hear from world-class guest speakers.

When and Where?

In early 2026, Rutland u3a transitioned to a brand-new regular venue and meeting day. If you are planning to attend, here are the essential details:

When: The first Wednesday of every month.

Time: Doors open at 10:00 am for socialising and refreshments; the main meeting and guest talk begin at 10:30 am.

Where: Oakham Baptist Church, Melton Road, Oakham, LE15 6AY.

Cost: Meetings are free for members. Annual membership is approximately £10, making it one of the best-value social opportunities in the region.

What to Expect at a Meeting

A typical monthly meeting is designed to be informal, welcoming, and intellectually stimulating.

The first 30 minutes are dedicated to "tea, coffee, and a chat." It’s the perfect time for new or prospective members to introduce themselves. You’ll find information desks where you can chat with committee members and group leaders about the 90+ interest groups currently active in Rutland.

Before the main event, the Chairman shares updates on upcoming trips, social events (like the popular "Pudding Club" or theatre outings), and news from the various interest groups.

The highlight of every meeting is a presentation from an invited speaker. The topics for 2026 are incredibly diverse, featuring everything from Cold War history and investigative policing to local wildlife conservation. These talks usually wrap up by noon, leaving plenty of time for questions.

Upcoming 2026 Highlights

March 4th: The BBC and the Bomb – A fascinating look at Cold War broadcasting from secret bunkers.

April 1st: How to Catch a Killer – Insights from a former Detective Chief Inspector.

May 6th: Reintroducing Ospreys – A look at the conservation efforts at the Belvoir Castle Estate.

How to Join

You don't need any qualifications to join just interest and enthusiasm. If you’ve never been before, you are welcome to attend a monthly meeting as a visitor to see what it’s all about before committing to a membership.
