Is Rutland affected by the lockdown measures currently in place in Leicester?

No. People living in Leicester and some outlying areas are being asked to follow stricter lockdown measures, because there’s a local outbreak in the city. 
These tougher restrictions do not apply to Rutland.

Are there any additional safety measures being introduced in Rutland in response to the local outbreak in Leicester?

We still encourage you to follow government guidance to keep people and communities safe. 
This includes:
  • observing social distancing rules (keeping two meters apart, where possible)
  • washing hands regularly
  • staying at home as much as possible
  • limiting contact with others
It’s also important that you arrange a COVID-19 test if you have any symptoms.

Are shops and businesses still open in Rutland?

Yes. Non-essential shops and businesses that were allowed to open on 15 June will remain open, but must continue to follow all necessary safety and social distancing guidelines.

Will recent changes announced by the government still be introduced in Rutland from 4 July?

Yes - pubs, restaurants and hairdressers in Rutland will still open on 4 July, as permitted. 
Rutland County Council Officers from the Council’s trading standards and community safety teams will be out in Oakham and Uppingham to monitor compliance with national safety guidelines. 

What is the guidance for people in Rutland who are shielding?

People who are clinically extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 should continue to follow the government's shielding guidance
This guidance is due to be relaxed on 6 July. 

Will schools remain open?

Yes. Rutland schools are still open for certain year groups and children of key workers. 
There are currently no plans to close schools.

Are public transport services still operating between Leicester and Rutland?

Public transport like buses and trains will continue to operate between Leicester and Rutland. 
People are advised against all but essential travel to and from Leicester and should avoid using public transport where possible. 
If you have to use public transport then you must wear a face covering when travelling. Government guidelines contain a number of exceptions for very young children, people with a disability and those with breathing difficulties.
There may be some disruption to public transport services as a result of the localised lockdown in Leicester. 
For the latest and most up-to-date travel information, check with the service operator.

What should I do if I have a hospital appointment in Leicester?

Hospital appointments in Leicester will continue unless you receive specific information from the hospital to say that your appointment has changed.

What is the latest COVID-19 guidance for people in Rutland?

The latest national guidance is:
  • stay at home as much as possible

  • keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
  • wash your hands regularly
  • do not leave home if you or anyone in your household has symptoms

  • a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell

Anyone displaying COVID-19 symptoms must stay at home and arrange to have a test.

I recognise that the upcoming opening of some businesses on Saturday will be concerning to residents in light of the Leicester lockdown.
The Police have robust plans in place in preparation for the easing of restrictions in some parts of our county and Rutland alongside the lockdown in Leicester. They remain prepared and ready to adapt to the circumstances.
I am so very encouraged to have seen exemplary social distancing being practiced in businesses throughout Rutland and Melton, and I have every confidence that residents will exhibit the same consideration for their neighbours as our hospitality sector reopens.
