Come and enjoy a fun family day out with the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust at Barnsdale on the north shore of Rutland Water.
“This is a day for the family, April heralds the start of spring the woodlands are alive with wildlife of all kinds,” said Rutland Water’s Nature Reserve Manager Tim Appleton. “Come and join our staff and volunteers and find out what really makes a wood buzz in spring.”
We will be putting on a variety of guided walks and there will be children’s activities ran by ‘Wildlife WATCH’ the junior branch of The Wildlife Trusts and the UK’s leading environmental action club for kids; there will be demonstrations from woodland craftsmen and women and a number of wildlife-themed stalls. Hot food and other refreshments will be available. Entry to the event is £5 per car to include car parking and some public participation opportunities.
Our exhibitors include the Rutland Osprey Project, local hedge-layer Ray Sykes, Northfield Farm Ltd, Manor Farm tree surgery and charcoal making, Rutland Willows, plus lots of local arts and crafts and children’s activity areas. There will also be Bushcraft skills from Dave Watson, as seen on BBC Countryfile!
A variety of demonstrations will take place throughout the day including bird ringing, wood turning, hedge-laying and willow weaving, pyrography, chair making and Japanese hand saws to name but a few!
There will be plenty of activities for children to get involved in - from nest box building, to tree ID dials, as well as leaf crown making and other woodland crafts.
