Standing proudly on 25 Coventry Road in Market Harborough, the Market Harborough Baptist Church boasts a rich and vibrant history dating back to 1653. This makes it one of the oldest Baptist churches in the Leicestershire area, witnessing and playing a pivotal role in the town's religious landscape for over three centuries.

The story of the church begins in the turbulent times of the English Civil War, where religious dissent simmered against the established Church of England. A small group of Baptists, seeking freedom of worship, started gathering in private homes for prayer and fellowship. Led by John Gill, a fiery preacher, their numbers grew steadily, leading to the construction of the first dedicated Baptist chapel in 1672.

Over the next century, the congregation continued to expand, necessitating a larger space. In 1845, the second chapel was built on the same site, featuring a striking Gothic Revival design that still forms the core of the present structure. This period also saw a flourishing of community activities, with the church establishing Sunday schools, temperance societies, and other initiatives aimed at serving the wider Market Harborough population.

The 20th century brought further changes. The church building underwent significant renovations in the 1930s, and the community continued to evolve, adapting to a changing social and religious landscape. While maintaining its Baptist identity, the church embraced ecumenical partnerships and broadened its outreach programs, becoming a beacon of inclusivity and social justice.

Today, the Market Harborough Baptist Church remains a vibrant centre of spiritual life in the town. Led by Reverend Christopher Shenton Brown, the church offers regular Sunday services, midweek activities for all ages, and a variety of community engagement initiatives. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the church strives to live out its core values of love for Jesus and love for the community, inviting everyone to explore faith and experience the transformative power of belonging.
