Oakham & Barleythorpe Boundary War Has Broke Out
Oakham Town Council has triggered a boundary war after last year requesting
a local governance review.
The review is underway and is going to cost the taxpayers of Rutland thousands
of pounds.
The review was triggered after the town clerk mistakenly told Oakham Town
Council if Barleythorpe became part of Oakham their income would increase
and they would not need to provide traditional services for the residents.
And former Mayor Jane Woodcock suggested the residents like to contribute
to our summer band concerts.
Barleythorpe Parish meeting has been taken over by a group which is described
as deluded by some members of Oakham Town Council.
The group is led by ex Oakham Town Councillor Dave Blanksby who resigned
highlighting bullying at Oakham Town Council.
Mr Blanksby and the group don't want a boundary change.
they also want to set up a parish council which I don't think is needed.
The group met with Oakham Neighbourhood Plan steering group
and as we saw in a report put before Oakham Town Council they don't
want Barleythorpe to be included in the Oakham Plan and don't wan to
work with the group. Which is a shame because the steering group is
made up of mainly very professional members of Oakham's community
not including our Mayor who only jumped on the band wagon after
he saw the community interest in setting up a plan. For a long time he
would say we don't need it and Uppingham will regret theirs.
Some members of Oakham members of Oakham Town are considering
standing in any future election if Barleythorpe decides it wants a parish
council.
Personally I think we should let Barleythorpe get on with its own
affairs.
If a boundary change is to go ahead this is unlikely to happen before
2019 and would result in extra seats on Oakham Town Council
we cant find enough to fill the ones we currently have. There is
hardly anything for the existing Councillors to do now,
Why would we want any more!
