Oakham Town Centre 2018

Oakham Town Centre

Rutland County Council is looking at options to improve Oakham Town Centre.

Before the bypass was built in 2007, the main function of Oakham High Street was to move large amounts of traffic through the town in the absence of an alternative route.

Although most people now use the High Street for retail and social interaction, the layout and street scene remain unchanged and do little to enhance the town.

Pavements and road surfaces in the centre of Oakham are also nearing the end of their useful life and plans to undertake a town centre improvement scheme to revitalise the area before the end of 2018 form part of the Council’s latest corporate plan.

The Council are looking to make improvements to Oakham Town Centre that will create a better environment for pedestrians, cyclists and shoppers and encourage more visitors into the town centre.

Project Stages

The key stages for the Town Centre Improvement Scheme were agreed in January 2017 and are as follows:

March 2017 - Stakeholder meetings to discuss concept options

(The chairman of Oakham Town Council Michael Haley decided at this stage
the project was of no interest to him or the Town Council membership and
failed to report anything to the full council)

April 2017 - Development of outline designs

June 2017 - Consultation on outline designs

October 2017 - Decision on outline design

November 2017 - Target costing and detailed design work

January 2018 - Completion of detailed design

March 2018 - Decision on detailed design

Cabinet met on Tuesday 10th October to discuss a report detailing the outcome of June's public consultation and have approved the selection of Option A (one-way) as the preferred option to be taken forward for further detailed design.

The full report from this meeting (No: 142/2017) can be found on  Meetings page

Following Cabinet’s decision, the Council will now begin work on a detailed design for the High Street, in line with Option A.

A third and final phase of consultation will then take place around this detailed design before a final decision on the scheme is taken by Full Council in early 2018.
