At the meeting of Oakham Town Council tonight an external auditor has been appointed
and instructed to immediately examine the council accounts due to the many errors.
We were given a report produced by a Cllr, in that report he mentions
incompetence and poor work by the clerk and internal auditor.
I was surprised to read the comment on the report saying after the special meeting on
29th June by early morning of the 30th the Cllr was uneasy that the effect of two
cash book entries that had been brought to his attention in the minutes immediately
before the 29th June.
So why was this not raised before councillors considered the amended statement
of accounts?
After the meeting I spoke to the Councillor and he told me it was the Clerk who
had approached him minutes before that meeting. Why did he leave it so late in the
day and why did he not report this to full council.
The Councillor said if he was at fault for not informing members then he would
resign. He said he had already spoken to the Mayor and told him the same.
Personally I don't think he should, he has done a very good job, especially when
he tells me how difficult the job has been.
I find the Clerk very difficult at times and after reading tonight report I believe
the word incompetence and failing to do a good complete job point to dismissal
or resignation.
The appalling situation our council currently finds itself in can not be ignored
or overlooked.
