The Prime Minister has committed to examining Rutland's ceremonial county status following concerns that England's smallest county could lose its historic identity during upcoming local government changes.
The issue was raised by ITV News Central reporter Lewis Warner, who pointed out a legislative oversight stemming from the Lieutenancies Act 1997. Because Rutland regained its independent unitary authority shortly after the legislation was enacted, its name was omitted from the text, leaving its ceremonial status tied directly to its existing council structure. With local government reorganisation threatening to dissolve current authorities, campaigners and local representatives worry the designation could vanish.
Responding to the question, the Prime Minister stated he would look into the issue, noting it was a new point raised with him. While stopping short of an immediate guarantee, he emphasised that wider administrative reforms are ultimately aimed at delivering better public services and empowering local communities.
Roughly one in six residents have signed a major petition urging the government to explicitly amend the legislation to protect Rutland's independent ceremonial status, separating its identity from future administrative council boundaries.
Rutland and Stamford MP Alicia Kearns welcomed the Prime Minister's pledge to review the matter, while defending the county's track record as an efficient, high-performing unitary authority.
As restructuring discussions continue across the region, pressure remains on Westminster to ensure England's smallest county preserves its centuries-old heritage.
