Rutland Winter Weather Update, School Closures, Road Closures

Rutland Winter Weather Update

After a day of heavy snow, Rutland County Council are working as hard as possible to clear main routes across Rutland.

Local farmers are helping us with the snow ploughs, and the gritting lorries are travelling behind them to try and clear roads as quickly as possible.

Rutland County Council are hopeing that with no more snow, their overnight work will improve road conditions in time for the morning commute. It is still snowing here in Oakham.

Rutland County Council also hope to get town centre pavements clear at the earliest opportunity.
On Saturday morning I spotted the mini snow plough out and clearing at 6.30 am.

Residents are advised to follow the council on Twitter @rutlandcouncil for more regular alerts.

Rutland Radio (107.2FM and 97.4FM) also provide regular updates during periods of bad weather.

Any information we receive will be listed here and regularly announced on air

Ongoing travel

Glaston Road, Uppingham - closed at Gashouse Hill (between the A47 and North Street East), due to a water leak and icy conditions

Langham Lane, Ashwell - closed for several days after barrier damage when a vehicle failed to stop to Ashwell Gatehouse (this isn't the main crossing between Ashwell and Whissendine by the signal box, but the one on the back roads to Langham)

Road Conditions
Major roads are being heavily gritted during this wintry weather, particularly at known trouble spots.  When snow falls, the council says it does it's best to clear it as soon as possible. However, during periods of snowfall, it often comes down at a faster rate than they can clear, so driving conditions may be hazardous for a few hours.  Salting of town centre pavements has also taken place and will do so again once the roads are cleared.

*Glaston Road (known locally as Gashouse Hill) Uppingham, between the A47 and North Street East is closed to through traffic on safety grounds as a water leak and freezing conditions are making driving conditions dangerous.

* Ashwell gatehouse,  the small unmanned level crossing on Langham Lane Ashwell, has been closed  due to damage to the barriers after a vehicle failed to stop at the level crossing gates.  (This is not the main crossing between Ashwell and Whissendine by the signal box, but the one on the back roads to Langham).
The road will remain closed for several days while Network Rail obtain parts to repair the gates.   Drivers will have to take the diversion via the C7316, Burley Road, Langham to Ashwell prison Roundabout and the C8320 Oakham Road Ashwell to Ashwell and vice versa.

Local Schools
There is a possibility that some schools may take the decision to close on Monday morning if snow keeps falling.

The Council strongly advise listening to Rutland Radio from 6am weekdays on 107.2FM (Oakham side of county) and 97.4FM (Stamford side of county) as they often receive information about school closures before they do.Rutland Radio also has a school closures page (external link) which is kept up-to-date

Bin Collections
A decision will be taken on bin collection arrangements on Monday morning.  This will depend on how much snow has fallen and how quickly it is being cleared.  The Council will update its website with the latest details when they have them. Find out more about bin collections during periods of bad weather.

They will also update their website with the latest news of the 'tips' (CA Sites) and whether they are opening as normal.

Green bin collections are still planned for next week but are dependent on weather/road conditions and a decision will be made each day if they are to go ahead or not. Cancellation of the green waste collection service will take place if the council is struggling to empty black bins.

If green bin collections do take place, and temperatures remain low, green waste in bins may freeze up meaning they cannot be emptied. Householders are advised (if possible) to ensure the materials in their green bins are not frozen to the sides. Those bins that cannot be emptied will be collected on the next scheduled collection.

Council Buildings
Rutland County Council operates a number of buildings including the council offices, libraries (Oakham, Uppingham, Ketton and Ryhall) and Rutland County Museum.
