Marks and Spencer M&S Food Hall and Aldi, York Way, Durham Way, Royston, SG8 5GX Timed Checkout. It was disappointing told find M&S checkout staff are now timed at the checkout. I find it hard to understand how any supermarket thinks good customer service is scanning items at speed especially when a customer does not want that kind of service. The checkout operator explained her speed to a couple who were failing to keep up with their packing, 'its fine you can take as long as you like to pack, I have to scan and complete the transaction as fast as I can because we are all now timed just like Aldi staff' What is the point of scanning fast if you are just going to then sit and wait for the customer to pack. I sort of get Aldi's poor customer service model because when the items are scanned and paid for you are meant to take the trolley or basket away from the checkout and pack.

I hope this is not a permanent change at M&S I often enjoy time chatting to M&S staff at the checkouts. If it is I would consider saving a few pence and popping into Aldi.
